Tommy Wingels scored once in regulation and then scored the only goal of the shootout as the host RoughRiders outlasted the Omaha Lancers to claim a 4-3 shootout win Saturday night.
Wingels lifted the puck home under the cross bar on the Riders’ fifth penalty shot after Cedar Rapids goaltender Richard Bachman had stopped all five Omaha shootout bids. Bachman made 37 saves in regulation and overtime.
It was Wingels who walked in behind the Omaha defense to the score the power play goal that gave the Riders a 3-2 lead at 4:09 of the third period.
The Lancers battled back to even the score at three at 13:14 of the third when Patrick Schafer shoveled an Andrew Conboy centering pass past Bachman.
The two teams also exchanged goals in each of the first two periods.
The Riders took a 1-0 lead 7:20 into the game when Aaron Bogosian jammed a rebound past Omaha goaltender Drew Palmisano (48 saves).
The Lancers responded just 20 second later to tie the game at one. Ben Arndt fired a Matt Thurber centering pass home for Omaha’s first goal of the night.
The Lancers took their first lead of the night at 3:31 of the second period on Nick Petrecki’s wrist shot from the right wing circle.
The Riders quickly responded, tying the score at two just one minute and eight seconds later. Cedar Rapids was on the power play when Evan Stephens beat Palmisano with a low shot from the high slot.
