The Des Moines Buccaneers jumped out to a 3-1 first period lead and went on to defeat the host RoughRiders 4-2 Friday night.
The Bucs opened the scoring just 2:12 into the game when Kyle Bailey walked down the slot to beat Rider goaltender Kent Patterson.
Des Moines extended the lead to 2-0 when Matt Read buried the puck from the right wing circle at 12:36 of the first period.
At 15:34 of the first the Riders got on the scoreboard for the first time while on the power play. Robin Bergman cut the Des Moines lead to 2-1 with a one time blast.
However, the Bucs would stretch the lead back out to two just nine seconds later when Andrew Blazek poked a loose puck home from the doorstep.
The Riders cranked up the attack in the second period, creating a series of quality chances, but Buccaneer goaltender Matt Dalton (34 saves) kept the Riders out until Bergman finally steered puck the puck home from the crease at 15:01 of the second for his second power play goal of the night.
Early in the third period, the Bucs again stalled the Riders’ comeback bid when Ben Ryan’s wraparound goal made it 4-2.
