Mike Seidel scored a pair of goals as the host RoughRiders rolled to
a 7-3 win over the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets Saturday night.
The RoughRiders broke the game open with
four first period goals in a span of just under three and a half minutes.
After Ohio’s Charles Brockett opened
the scoring 3:15 into the game with a drive from the high slot, Doug
Jones started the Rider onslaught by scoring on a breakaway at 7:52
of the first period.
Just 15 seconds later, David Boehm’s
wraparound gave the Riders a 2-1 lead.
The Riders extended the lead to a pair
at 9:41 on a Seidel power play goal. Siedel jammed the puck past
Ohio goaltender Jonathan Czarnecki from the side of the net.
Dan Dries raced into the goalmouth to
finish a 2-on-1 rush and cap off the Rider first period outburst at
the 11:19 mark.
At 10:16 of the second period the Riders
stretched the lead to 5-1 when Brett Dickinson scored Cedar Rapids’
second power play goal on a cross-crease feed from Jacob Cepis.
The Blue Jackets were on the power play
when Dan Barczuk brought Ohio within three with a wrister from the slot
at 15:28 of the second.
The Riders would bounce back to score
twice in just over a minute early in the third period. Seidel
walked in alone to make it 6-2 at 1:32 of the third. At 2:49 Rob
Bordson cut into the slot and put a stylish exclamation point on the
Rider effort by firing puck up under the cross bar.
Zac MacVoy shoveled a loose puck past
Rider netminder Kent Patterson (24 saves) to make it 7-3 with just under
seven and a half minutes left, but by that time the issue was no longer
in doubt.
