Rody Selk converted the deciding penalty shot and the host Des Moines
Buccaneers edged the RoughRiders 4-3 in a marathon twelve-round shootout
to claim a 5-4 win Friday night.
The
Riders, who threw 51 shots at Des Moines goaltender Matt Dalton in regulation
and overtime, did earn one point for the shootout defeat.
Selk
brought a roller coaster night to an end by snapping a wrist shot past
Rider goaltender Richard Bachman (35 saves). Matt Read, Shane
Sims and Chris Knowlton also scored in the shootout for the Bucs, while
Tommy Wingels, Evan Stephens and Kevin Wehrs converted for Cedar Rapids.
The
Riders took the game to overtime after Robin Bergman tied the score
at four at x:xx of the third period. Bergman buried a Mike Seidel
centering pass for his second power play goal of the night.
The
Bucs had scored twice earlier in the third period to turn a 3-2 Rider
edge into a 4-3 lead of their own. Read (who also had two assists)
swept a loose puck home from close range to knot the score at thee apiece
just xx seconds into the third.
Des
Moines was on the power play when Jeff Petry fired in the go-ahead goal
from the blue line at x:xx.
The
Riders and Bucs likewise spent the first two periods swapping body blows.
The
Bucs opened the scoring when Chris Knowlton shoveled in an Andrew Olson
centering pass at 6:29 of the first period.
Bergman’s
first power play goal evened the score at one at 14:19 of the first.
The
Riders took their first lead of the night 2:41 into the second period.
Cedar Rapids was again up a man when Brett Dickinson charged in from
the point to bury a goalmouth feed from Jacob Cepis and put the Riders
on top 2-1.
The
Bucs quickly responded to even the score at two. Richard Purslow
cut across the goalmouth to beat Bachman at the 3:11 mark of the second.
The
Riders would retake the lead with just under five minutes left in the
period. Dan Dries whipped a backhander in under the crossbar for
Cedar Rapids’ first even strength goal of the night.
