COMING IN
The RoughRiders have won five straight games,
equaling their longest winning streak of the season. The Riders
won three games in five days last week, claiming a 7-4 victory at
Chicago last Tuesday, defeating the Steel 4-3 in a rematch last Friday
in Cedar Rapids and outlasting Sioux City 6-5 in a shootout one night
later at home.
The RoughRiders are tied for first place in the
United States Hockey League’s East Division with the Waterloo Black
Hawks. The Black Hawks have three games in hand on the
Riders. The Riders and Hawks are two points behind Sioux City in
the race for first place overall.
By defeating Sioux City last Saturday, the Riders
joined the Musketeers as the second team in the league to reach the 20
win plateau. The Riders and Black Hawks both cracked the 40 point
barrier with wins Saturday evening.
The Riders are the only team in the league averaging
more than four goals per game. The Riders score 4.3 per contest.
The Riders have averaged just under six goals per game during their
five-game winning streak. They have outscored their opponents
29-19 during that run. The Riders have scored at least four goals
in each of their last five games and in seven of their last eight.
Jacob Cepis (22-22-44) has ripped off a five-game
point-scoring streak during which he has rung up 11 points on six goals
and five assists. In the process Cepis has taken over the league
lead in goals and points. Cepis is also tied for eighth in
assists.
The Riders last weekend won the first two games of a
six-game homestand- their longest homestand of the season. The
Riders have now won six straight on home ice. Cedar Rapids has not lost
at home since falling to Indiana 5-3 at the ice arena on December 1.
Last Tuesday’s win was the Riders’ third in a row on the road.
Rider goaltender Kent Patterson set a team record by
making 58 saves in last Saturday’s wild win over Sioux City. The
Riders established another team record by allowing 63 shots in that
contest.
Patterson is now riding a four-game winning streak. Patterson has
also suffered just one regulation loss in his last nine appearances,
going 6-1-1 with a 3.01 goals against average and a .920 save
percentage during that stretch.
The Storm swept a pair of games from the Ohio Junior
Blue Jackets last weekend in Columbus. Tri-City shut out the Blue
Jackets 2-0 last Saturday and scored a 4-2 win last night.
Tri-City is now unbeaten in regulation (4-0-1) in
its last five games and has gone 8-1-1 in its last ten.
The Storm is the second stingiest team in the
league. Tri-City gives up just 2.6 goals per game. The
Storm has allowed three goals or fewer in regulation in each of its
last 12 games.
Tri-City goaltender Ian Keserich ranks second in the
league in goals against average (2.27) and fourth in save percentage
(.911).
Calle Ridderwall (15-18-33) is the Storm’s top point
producer. Ridderwall is tied for ninth in the league in
goal-scoring.
The Gamblers were swept on home ice by Lincoln last
weekend. Green Bay fell 4-2 last Friday and suffered a 6-1 defeat
last Saturday.
The Gamblers have now lost three of their last four games and have gone 2-4-2 in their last eight games.
Hitting the road this weekend may be just the tonic
Green Bay requires. The Gamblers have gone 8-4-2 on the road this
season and just 6-9-2 at home. Green Bay opens this weekend with
a visit to Waterloo Friday night.
Adam Avramenko has been a workhorse in goal for the
Gamblers. Avramenko leads the league in minutes played (1694:41)
and has started 21 of Green Bay’s last 22 games and 29 of 31 games on
the season.
Segio Somma (21-9-30) ranks second in the league in
goal-scoring. Derrick LaPoint (9-19-28) ranks third among
defensemen in points and is tied for fourth among blue liners in goals.

COACHES
Cedar Rapids
Mark Carlson, 8th year (238-169-39)
Mark Carlson has been the RoughRiders’ coach since the team arrived in
Cedar Rapids in 1999. In 2005-06 he led the Riders to their
second straight East Division title.
He has also piloted the Riders to six straight winning seasons and six
straight Clark Cup playoff berths. The Riders are one of just two
USHL teams to have reached the postseason each of the last six years.
The Riders are the only team to have advanced at least as far as the
Clark Cup semi-finals/East Division finals each of the last two springs
and four of the last five years. On December 3, 2005 Carlson
picked up his two hundredth career coaching win as the Riders defeated
Omaha 2-1 in a shootout. Carlson’s RoughRiders went 218-159-38 in
his first seven seasons with the club.
The high point of his tenure was leading the
RoughRiders to the first Clark Cup (playoff) title in team history
along with a share of the Anderson Cup regular season title and the
East Division title in 2004-05. The Riders went 42-13-5 during
the regular season- the best record in club history- and swept through
the first two rounds of the playoffs before defeating Sioux City three
games to two in the finals. For his efforts, Carlson was named the
2004-05 USHL Coach of the Year.
Carlson, a native of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, is a
graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell where he earned a
B.S. in Business Administration and Marketing. Also while at Lowell,
Carlson skated in the highly competitive Hockey East conference as a
forward on the River Hawks’ hockey team. His on-ice talent was
recognized even before he arrived in Lowell when he was taken in the
1987 National Hockey League draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
After graduating from UML, Carlson spent one season as an assistant
coach at Lawrenceville School before returning to Lowell to serve as an
assistant to head coach Bruce Crowder. After helping the River Hawks to
a berth in the 1996 NCAA tournament, Carlson spent another three
seasons beside Crowder as an assistant at Northeastern University in
Boston, where he also acted as recruiting coordinator. He earned a
master’s degree in education from N.U.
During his time at N.U. Carlson also acted as recruiting
coordinator. Among those he recruited for the Huskies were Jim
Fahey, who now skates for the National Hockey League’s San Jose Sharks,
and Mike Ryan, who would later be the top draft pick of the NHL’s
Dallas Stars.
Tri-City
Bliss Littler, 6th year (167-106-31); 4th year Tri-City (122-64-22)
This is Bliss Littler’s fourth season as Tri-City
coach and general manager. Littler has piloted to Storm to three
straight playoff berths.
Littler directed the Storm to the league’s best
record in his first year in Kearney. For his efforts he was named
2003-04 USHL General Manager of the Year.
Littler arrived in central Nebraska after spending a
season and a half as coach and general manager of the now defunct
Topeka ScareCrows. The ScareCrows went 45-42-9 under Littler.
Prior to his tenure in Topeka, Littler had a highly successful seven
year (1993-2000) run as coach of the Billings Bulls of the America West
Hockey League. During Littler’s time in Billings, the Bulls won
five AWHL Borne Cup titles and went 251-104-30.
Green Bay
Mark Mazzoleni, 3rd year (65-77-9)
Mark Mazzoleni is in his third year in charge of the
Gamblers. Last season he piloted Green Bay to the club’s first
Clark Cup playoff berth in three years.
Mazzoleni took over the Gamblers after spending 16 years as a
collegiate head coach, the last five at Harvard. Mazzoleni went
82-72-13 behind the Harvard bench, leading the Crimson to three NCAA
tournament berths and two Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference
tournament titles.
Prior to taking over at Harvard, Mazzoleni spent
five years at Miami (Ohio) University, where he piloted the Red Hawks
to an 85-83-20 record and the second NCAA tournament berth in school
history.
The vastly experienced Mazzoleni began his coaching career as an
assistant at the University of Illinois-Chicago (1980-85). His
first head coaching job was at Division III Wisconsin-Stevens Points
(1986-91) where he piloted the Pointers to three straight national
titles. Mazzoleni next spent three years as assistant coach and
recruiting coordinator at the University of Minnesota (1991-94).
In his playing days, Mazzoleni was a goaltender at Michigan State from 1976 to 1980.
HISTORY
Rider goaltender Kent Patterson set a team record by
making 58 saves in last Saturday’s wild win over Sioux City.
Patterson snapped a record originally set by Al Stalock, who stopped 52
shots on March 17, 2006 in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Tri-City Storm.
The Riders established another team record by
allowing 63 shots Saturday night. The previous club record was
set on February 8, 2000 when the Riders gave up 62 shots in a 5-0 loss
to the Lincoln Stars.
Last season was the Riders’ third straight 30-win campaign and also the
fifth time in the last six years that the Riders have picked up at
least 30 victories.
The Riders went 42-13-5 on the road over the last two seasons
combined. The Riders’ road record was superior to their home
record both last season season and in 2004-05.
The Riders are, along with the Omaha Lancers, one of just two teams who
have reached the playoffs each of the last six years. As all 12
USHL teams will qualify for the postseason this year, that streak will
be stretch to seven consecutive playoff berths in April.
The Riders are the only USHL team to advance at least as far as the
division finals each of the last two years. Furthermore, Cedar
Rapids is also the only team to reach the league’s final four in four
of the last five years. Only one team (Sioux City) has even
reached the second round three times in the last five years.
The 2003-04 Anderson Cup title was the first in Storm history.
The Storm also made the Clark Cup finals for the first- and so far
only- time in 2004. Tri-City has reached the playoffs each of the
last three seasons.
The Gamblers were swept in three straight games by the Des Moines
Buccaneers in the first round of last spring’s Clark Cup
playoffs. That postseason appearance was Green Bay’s first in
four years. Prior to last year, Green Bay last appeared in the
playoffs in 2001-02. The Gamblers also won what was then their
fourth straight East Division title in 2001-02.
Green Bay has twice claimed each of the Clark Cup (1996 and 2000),
Anderson Cup (1996 and 1997), and junior A national titles (1996 and
1997).

Highlights
Three former RoughRiders made key contributions as
Michigan State swept a pair of games from Alaska-Fairbanks last
weekend. The Spartans downed the Nanooks 3-2 last Friday and
scored a 4-3 victory last Saturday.
