Riders Outlast Gamblers 5-4 in Shootout

Rob Bordson and Tommy Wingels converted penalty shots as the host RoughRiders outscored the Green Bay Gamblers 2-1 in the shootout and claimed a 5-4 win on the night Saturday evening.

Bordson and Wingels converted back-to-back shootout chances while only Kurt Davis to put a penalty shot past Rider goaltender Richard Bachman.

The game went to overtime and, eventually, the shootout only after the Gamblers came from behind to tie the score in regulation on three separate occasions.

The Riders jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on goals just 52 seconds apart from Jacob Cepis and Robin Bergman. Cepis converted a Rob Bordson feed from the doorstep at 7:57 and Bergman buried a rebound to double the lead at the 8:49 mark.

The Gamblers, however, would battle back late in the first with two goals of their own. Baylor Dieter got Green Bay on the scoreboard with a blast from the high slot at 15:09 and Mike Sislo, with the Gamblers on the power play, corralled a carom off the post and fired the puck into the back of the net at 18:49 to even the score.

The Riders moved right back in front at 1:31 of the second period when Scott Wietecha drove the puck past fallen Green Bay goaltender Adam Avramenko (44 saves) from the slot.

Just 42 seconds later the Gamblers deadlocked the game at three apiece while shorthanded. Nick Tabisz provided the quick Green Bay response on a breakaway.

Wietecha’s second goal- a tip-in from the doorstep- gave the Riders the lead yet again at 3:27 of the third period.

The Gamblers would once more claw back to equalize, this time when Sislo scored his second power play goal from the goal mouth with just over six minutes left in regulation.

That goal would force overtime, but after sudden death ended with out a goal, the Riders were able to enjoy the last laugh in the shootout.
