Ricci Named RoughRiders’ Captain; Miskovic, Vokes Are Assistant Captains

November 23, 2004- Rob Ricci has been named captain of the 2004-05 Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, the RoughRiders announced today. Zach Miskovic and Matt Vokes will serve as assistant captains.

“Rob is not someone who always has to say a lot to lead. He is a guy who plays extremely hard on such a consistent basis and who knows how to lead by example,” said RoughRiders coach and general manager Mark Carlson. “Like Rob, Zach and Matt are two young men with a lot of experience and maturity who know what it takes to be successful in our league.”

Ricci, a 19-year old forward, is in his second season with the Riders. In 16 games this season the Brampton, Ontario, native has scored four goals and notched a team leading ten assists for 14 points (second on the team).

Last week Ricci was named Let’s Play Hockey/United States Hockey League Offensive Player of the Week after recording three goals and three assists in just three games. Ricci set a team season high when he registered four points (two goals, two assists) in a 7-4 victory over the Des Moines Buccaneers on November 12 in Urbandale.

Last year Ricci finished third on the team in point scoring, producing 17 goals and 39 points while playing in all 60 games.

Miskovic, 19, is in his third year with the RoughRiders. The defenseman has picked up two goals and eight points this season and is tied for ninth among United States Hockey League blue liners in points. Miskovic leads the Riders with 40 penalty minutes so far this season. The River Forest, Illinois, native has been an especially strong presence on defense in recent days, posting a plus/minus rating of +6 in just his last three games. Miskovic is a +2 on the season.

Like Ricci, Miskovic has not missed a game during his Rider career. He ranks fourth in team history in games played (136). Last season Miskovic scored six goals and totaled 21 points and finished eighth in the USHL with 139 penalty minutes. Over the course of his two-plus year Rider career, Miskovic has totaled ten goals, 37 points and 270 penalty minutes.

Vokes, 19, is back for his second season in Cedar Rapids. He has five goals and ten points in 15 games with the Riders this season after finishing fourth on the team in point scoring last year (17-21-38). Vokes has piled up six points in his last six games and leads the Riders with three power play goals.

The Auburn, Massachusetts-born forward will begin his college career at Brown next season.

The East Division-leading RoughRiders (11-3-2, 24 points) return to action tomorrow night at 7:05 when they open up a home-and-home series against the Waterloo Black Hawks at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The Riders will visit Waterloo Thursday night at 7:05. The Riders are unbeaten in regulation (4-0-1) in their last five games.

Tickets for all remaining RoughRiders home games- including tomorrow night’s contest- are now on sale at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office.
