COMING IN
The RoughRiders split a home-and-home series with
the Lincoln Stars last weekend. The Riders fell 7-3 last Friday
in Lincoln but rebounded with a 3-2 win on home ice one night later.
The Riders are now three points behind the Waterloo Black Hawks in the race for first place in the United
States Hockey League’s East Division.
While the Riders are the highest scoring team in the
USHL- Cedar Rapids is averaging 4.4 goals per game- they have scored
just three goals in each of their last four games.
While last Friday’s loss ended the Riders’ five-game
road winning streak, Cedar Rapids still boasts the best away record
(7-2-0) in the USHL.
As it was each of the last two seasons, the Riders’
road record is again superior to their home record (6-5-0). The
Riders have gone 49-15-5 in away games and 39-26-6 at home since the
start of the 2004-05 season.
The Riders’ Jacob Cepis (15-14-29) is tied for the
league lead in goals and is tied for second in point scoring.
Cepis went without a point over the weekend after collecting ten points
in his prior five games.
This weekend marks the second time this season the
RoughRiders will be faced with three games in three days.
Following this weekend’s games, the Riders will be idle until returning
from the USHL’s holiday break on December 29 to take on Green Bay on
home ice.
The Storm shutout the Chicago Steel in back-to-back
games last weekend. Tri-City won 4-0 last Friday and 6-0 last
Saturday.
The Storm has now gone 156:27 without giving up a goal. Tri-City
last surrendered a goal when Lincoln’s Patrick Johnson scored at 3:33
of the second period of the Stars’ 3-2 win over the Storm on December 1.
On the season, the Storm and Musketeers have been equally stingy
defensively. Both surrender an average of just 2.9 goals per
game, second fewest in the league.
Calle Ridderwall (11-14-25) is the Storm’s top point scorer.
Tri-City’s Ian Keserich ranks third among goaltenders in goals against average (2.35).
After sweeping a weekend series with Ohio, the league-leading
Musketeers have now won six straight games. Sioux City defeated
the Junior Blue Jackets 6-2 last Friday and 6-1 last Saturday.
Should the Musketeers win their game in Des Moines Friday night, Sioux
City would equal the longest winning streak in the USHL this
season. The Musketeers won seven straight games between October
14 and November 4 as did the Des Moines Buccaneers between October 7
and October 27.
The Musketeers have scored six goals in each of their last three last
games and have scored four or more in each of their last seven outings
and in nine of their last ten. On the season, Sioux City ranks
third in the league offensively, averaging 4.3 goals per game.
The Muskies have allowed a total of just four goals in their last three
games and have given up two or fewer in five of their last six.
The Musketeers, who are 10-2-0 this season at the Tyson Events Center,
have more home wins than any other team in the league. Sioux City
has won each of its last four home games.
The Musketeers’ Phil DeSimone (10-23-33) took over the league
point-scoring lead by recording five points (one goal, four assists)
last weekend. DeSimone is also tied for the league lead in
assists. He has collected at least two assists in each of his
last four games.
DeSimone is one of three Musketeers who ranks in the top ten in
point-scoring. Max Pacioretty (12-15-27) is tied for seventh,
while Blake Martin (13-13-26) is tied for ninth.
Sioux City goaltender Jerry Kuhn ranks second in the league in save
percentage (.927), third in wins (11) and fourth in goals against
average (2.55).
The Musketeers head into Sunday’s game 9-0-0 against East Division opponents this season.
Like the Riders, the Musketeers will also play three games in three
days this weekend. The Muskies visit Des Moines Friday night and
Sioux Falls Saturday evening.

COACHES
Cedar Rapids
Mark Carlson, 8th year (231-166-38)
Mark Carlson has been the RoughRiders’ coach since the team arrived in
Cedar Rapids in 1999. In 2005-06 he led the Riders to their
second straight East Division title.
He has also piloted the Riders to six straight winning seasons and six
straight Clark Cup playoff berths. The Riders are one of just two
USHL teams to have reached the postseason each of the last six years.
The Riders are the only team to have advanced at least as far as the
Clark Cup semi-finals/East Division finals each of the last two springs
and four of the last five years. On December 3, 2005 Carlson
picked up his two hundredth career coaching win as the Riders defeated
Omaha 2-1 in a shootout. Carlson’s RoughRiders went 218-159-38 in
his first seven seasons with the club.
The high point of his tenure was leading the
RoughRiders to the first Clark Cup (playoff) title in team history
along with a share of the Anderson Cup regular season title and the
East Division title in 2004-05. The Riders went 42-13-5 during
the regular season- the best record in club history- and swept through
the first two rounds of the playoffs before defeating Sioux City three
games to two in the finals. For his efforts, Carlson was named the
2004-05 USHL Coach of the Year.
Carlson, a native of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, is a
graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell where he earned a
B.S. in Business Administration and Marketing. Also while at Lowell,
Carlson skated in the highly competitive Hockey East conference as a
forward on the River Hawks’ hockey team. His on-ice talent was
recognized even before he arrived in Lowell when he was taken in the
1987 National Hockey League draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
After graduating from UML, Carlson spent one season as an assistant
coach at Lawrenceville School before returning to Lowell to serve as an
assistant to head coach Bruce Crowder. After helping the River Hawks to
a berth in the 1996 NCAA tournament, Carlson spent another three
seasons beside Crowder as an assistant at Northeastern University in
Boston, where he also acted as recruiting coordinator. He earned a
master’s degree in education from N.U.
During his time at N.U. Carlson also acted as recruiting
coordinator. Among those he recruited for the Huskies were Jim
Fahey, who now skates for the National Hockey League’s San Jose Sharks,
and Mike Ryan, who would later be the top draft pick of the NHL’s
Dallas Stars.
Tri-City
Bliss Littler, 6th year (161-105-30); 4th year Tri-City (116-63-21)
This is Bliss Littler’s fourth season as Tri-City
coach and general manager. Littler has piloted to Storm to three
straight playoff berths.
Littler directed the Storm to the league’s best
record in his first year in Kearney. For his efforts he was named
2003-04 USHL General Manager of the Year.
Littler arrived in central Nebraska after spending a
season and a half as coach and general manager of the now defunct
Topeka ScareCrows. The ScareCrows went 45-42-9 under Littler.
Prior to his tenure in Topeka, Littler had a highly successful seven
year (1993-2000) run as coach of the Billings Bulls of the America West
Hockey League. During Littler’s time in Billings, the Bulls won
five AWHL Borne Cup titles and went 251-104-30.
Sioux City
Dave Siciliano, 14th year (471-196-46); 7th year Sioux City (222-119-36)
Dave Siciliano is the second winningest coach in
USHL history. The Musketeers finished with a winning record in
each of his first six seasons with the club. He has twice piloted
the Muskies to the Clark Cup finals, falling to the Riders in 2005 and
winning the title in 2002.
Siciliano spent seven highly successful years behind the bench of the
now defunct Thunder Bay Flyers from 1986 through 1993. He led the
Flyers to both the Clark Cup and Anderson Cup (regular season title) in
1988 and again in 1989 and to another pair of Anderson Cups in 1991 and
1992. The Thunder Bay native was named USHL Coach of the Year in
1987, 1989 and 1991.
Prior to returning to the USHL with Musketeers in
2000, Siciliano spent two years behind the bench of the Ontario Hockey
League’s Owen Sound Platers.
HISTORY
Last season was the Riders’ third straight 30-win
campaign and also the fifth time in the last six years that the Riders
have picked up at least 30 victories.
The Riders went 42-13-5 on the road over the last two seasons
combined. The Riders’ road record was superior to their home
record both last season season and in 2004-05.
The Riders are, along with the Omaha Lancers, one of just two teams who
have reached the playoffs each of the last six years. As all 12
USHL teams will qualify for the postseason this year, that streak will
be stretch to seven consecutive playoff berths in April.
The Riders are the only USHL team to advance at least as far as the
division finals each of the last two years. Furthermore, Cedar
Rapids is also the only team to reach the league’s final four in four
of the last five years. Only one team (Sioux City) has even
reached the second round three times in the last five years.
The 2003-04 Anderson Cup title was the first in Storm history.
The Storm also made the Clark Cup finals for the first- and so far
only- time in 2004. Tri-City has reached the playoffs each of the
last three seasons.
Sioux City’s 2002 Clark Cup title was the third in club history.
The Musketeers won the Anderson and Clark Cups in both 1982 and 1986.
