Cedar Rapids’ Robin Bergman and Pat Cannone scored just over three minutes apart late in the second period to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 RoughRider lead and the host Riders went on to defeat the Chicago Steel 3-1 Saturday night.
The Riders evened the score at one while on the power play when Bergman backhanded a rebound past former Rider goaltender Pat McGann at 16:21 of the second.
With just over a half minute left in the period, Cannone gave the Riders their first lead of the night with a wrist shot from the left wing circle.
The Riders protected the one goal lead deep into the third period and then put the Steel away when Jacob Cepis scored on a breakaway with just 2:21 remaining.
A 43-save performance from McGann kept the Steel in the game. McGann was especially sharp early for the Steel, making 13 first period saves, including one on a Mike Seidel penalty shot.
The Steel opened the scoring 6:25 into the first when Sean Dolan worked a give-and-go with Mike Embach and fired the puck home from the left wing circle.
