The Riders earned three of a possible four points from a pair of home games last weekend. The Riders picked up one point for a 5-4 shootout loss to <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Lincoln</st1:City></st1:place> Friday. The Riders bounced back with a convincing 5-1 win over Tri-City Saturday.<o:p></o:p> The Riders now lead Indiana and Chicago, who are tied for second place in the east, by six points in the race for the top spot in the division. The Riders have three games in hand on both the Ice and the Steel. The Riders are the only team in the division with a winning record.<o:p></o:p> With one goal and one assist in last Friday’s game third year forward Jon Grabarek has now tied Chase Watson’s team career point scoring record (97). Grabarek had a chance to break the record when he took the Riders’ first penalty shot of the season in the second period of Saturday night’s game, but he was stopped by Tri-City goaltender Nick Hopper.<o:p></o:p> Grabarek is just one of many contributors to a consistently potent <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Cedar Rapids</st1:City></st1:place> attack. The Riders have taken over the league lead in goals per game (3.9) after scoring at least four goals in each of their last five games and in seven of their last eight outings.<o:p></o:p> This Wednesday’s game against <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:City></st1:place> will bring the Riders’ four game home stand to an end. The Riders are unbeaten in regulation (4-0-1) in their last five home games. <o:p></o:p> Saturday’s win was the Riders’ first of the season against a West Division opponent. The Riders have gone <st1:date w:st="on" Month="1" Day="2" Year="2002">1-2-2</st1:date> against the west. Overall, West Division teams have gone <st1:date w:st="on" Month="7" Day="30" Year="2002">30-7-2</st1:date> in games against their eastern counterparts so far this season. <o:p></o:p> The Riders are now embarking on a stretch of five straight games against East Division foes. The Riders have gone 10-1 against the east on the season. <o:p></o:p> <st1:City w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:City> shutout <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:City></st1:place> 4-0 last Saturday to snap a season long three game losing streak. The Black Hawks fell 3-2 in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> last Friday. The Hawks have gone just <st1:date w:st="on" Month="2" Day="6" Year="2001">2-6-1</st1:date> in their last nine games after starting the season <st1:date w:st="on" Month="4" Day="2" Year="2001">4-2-1</st1:date>. <o:p></o:p> The Black Hawks are the lowest scoring team in the USHL. <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:City></st1:place> has scored just 34 goals (only 21 at even strength) in 16 games this season, an average of just 2.1 goals per contest. <o:p></o:p> The Black Hawks are the second stingiest defensive team in the league, thanks in large part to the play of goaltender Drew O’Connell. O’Connell was today named Let’s Play Hockey/USHL Defensive Player of the Week after posting his second shutout Saturday against <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:City></st1:place>. O’Connell, who leads the league in goals against average (1.80) and save percentage (.934), was also named the league’s Goaltender of the Month for October.<o:p></o:p> <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on">Indiana</st1:State></st1:place> went <st1:date w:st="on" Month="1" Day="1" Year="2001">1-1-1</st1:date> in three home games last week. The Ice defeated the Chicago Steel 3-1 last Wednesday before dropping a pair of tight decisions to <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City></st1:place> over the weekend. The Ice fell 4-3 Saturday and suffered a 1-0 overtime loss Sunday.<o:p></o:p> The Ice has gone just <st1:date w:st="on" Month="1" Day="4" Year="2001">1-4-1</st1:date> in it’s last six games and just <st1:date w:st="on" Month="2" Day="6" Year="2001">2-6-1</st1:date> in it’s last nine. <o:p></o:p> <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on">Indiana</st1:State></st1:place>’s Todd McIlrath (<st1:date w:st="on" Month="8" Day="16" Year="2024">8-16-24</st1:date>) leads the league in assists and is tied for the lead in point scoring. Ted Purcell scored twice for the Riders while Jon Grabarek and Jordan Pietrus had one goal and one assist apiece. The Riders scored five unanswered goals after falling behind 1-0 in the first period. Shane Lovdahl’s first period power play goal tied the game and kick started the Rider onslaught. Tomas Petruska put the Hawks on top in the first period.
