Black Hawks Slip Past Riders 4-3

Paul Weisgarber scored the game winning goal with 5:28 remaining in the third period as the Waterloo Black Hawks rallied from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the host RoughRiders 4-3 Friday night.

Weisgarber swept the puck home from the left wing circle to snap a 3-3 tie.

The Black Hawks entered the third period trailing 3-2 but quickly evened the score with their third power play goal of the night. Pasko Skarica’s blue line blast clanged off the goal post but James Marcou was on hand to bury the rebound just 23 seconds into the period.

Brett Barta’s second period power play goal started the Black Hawk comeback. Barta fired a rebound into the back of the net at 14:33 of the second after Rider goaltender Kent Patterson (34 saves) stopped Vince Loverde’s drive.

Barta’s goal slowed the Riders’ momentum after Scott Wietecha and Evan Stephens scored back-to-back goals for Cedar Rapids earlier in the period. Wietecha’s long range rocket snapped a 1-1 tie at 4:14 of the second. At 11:52 Stephens shoveled the puck past Waterloo netminder Ryan Rondeau (31 saves) from the goalmouth to stretch the lead to two.

The Riders and Hawks gave a hint of the see-saw ride to follow by trading first period haymakers. Waterloo was up a man when Matt Arhontas scored from close range 12:18 into the game. Cedar Rapids responded just 25 seconds later when Cepis raced in alone to even the score at one.
