RoughRiders’ Purcell Commits to Maine

November 22- Cedar Rapids RoughRiders forward Ted Purcell has committed to the University of Maine, the RoughRiders announced today. Purcell will begin his college career in the fall of 2006.

“We’re very happy for Teddy,” said RoughRiders coach and general manager Mark Carlson. “He’s come in this year and done a very good job for us. While he’s obviously a very skilled player his willingness to work hard has been one of the main reasons he’s been successful this season.”

Purcell, 19, leads the RoughRiders in goals (8) and points (15) and is tied for seventh in the United States Hockey League in goal scoring. Purcell scored a pair of goals last Friday in a 5-4 shootout loss to Lincoln to take over the team scoring lead. The St. John’s, Newfoundland, native has scored six goals and totaled 11 points in just his last eight games.

The Riders selected Purcell in the seventeenth round of May’s USHL draft with the one hundred thirty-fifth overall choice. Purcell played for the Notre Dame Hounds of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League last season. He scored 21 goals and notched 46 points in 51 games with the Hounds.

Maine is a perennial college hockey power. The Black Bears are currently ranked twelfth in the nation with a 9-6 record and are tied for second place in Hockey East with a 5-3 conference record. The Black Bears last season won the Hockey East title and reached the national title game. Maine has twice won the national championship- in 1993 and 1999.

Purcell joins Justin Abdelkader (Michigan State), Phil Axtell (Michigan Tech), Greg Collins (New Hampshire), Ray Eichenlaub (Miami of Ohio), Gary Steffes (Miami of Ohio) and Matt Vokes (Brown) as the seventh member of the 2004-05 RoughRiders to make a college commitment.

Purcell and the East Division-leading RoughRiders (11-3-2, 24 points) return to action Wednesday night at 7:05 when they open up a home-and-home series against the Waterloo Black Hawks at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The Riders will visit Waterloo Thursday night at 7:05. The Riders are unbeaten in regulation (4-0-1) in their last five games.

Tickets for all remaining RoughRiders first half home games- including Wednesday’s contest- are now on sale at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office. Tickets can be purchased over the phone at (319) 261-4625 or in person at the ice arena.
