Andy Miele’s shootout goal proved decisive as Kent Patterson stopped all five Sioux Falls penalty shots and the RoughRiders claimed a 4-3 shootout win over the host Stampede Friday night.

After overtime ended with the score tied at three, Miele scored with a backhander on the Riders’ second penalty shot and Patterson, who made 31 saves in regulation and overtime, did the rest.

The Riders twice took the lead in regulation but the Stampede battled back to even the score both times.

In the first period, the Riders scored twice in ten seconds to grab a 2-0 advantage. At 13:34 Tyler Thomspon snapped the puck home from the slot. Ian Slater charged into the Sioux Falls goalmouth from the ensuing faceoff and buried the rebound after Stampede goaltender Matt Lundin stopped his initial bid.

With just under a minute remaining in the first, Sioux Falls got on scoreboard while on the power play when David Solway rammed the puck past Patterson from the doorstep.

Zach Hansen’s breakaway goal evened the score at 5:37 of the second period.

The Riders re-established the lead when Doug Jones scored shorthanded at 11:30 of the second. Lundin stymied Pat Cannone, but Jones was on hand to fire the rebound into the back of the net and make it 3-2.

Sioux Falls deadlocked the game again with just under two minutes left in the period with another breakaway goal. This time Drew Fisher walked in alone to knot it at three apiece.
