Former Cedar Rapids RoughRiders forward Chad Costello, now a freshman at Northeastern University in Boston, has been named Superskills Hockey East Rookie of the Week.
Costello, 20, scored the game-winning goal in Northeastern’s 3-2 win over sixth-ranked Michigan last Saturday night in Ann Arbor. Costello had notched a pair of assists one night earlier in a hard-fought 4-3 overtime loss to the Wolverines.
On the season, Costello (1-4-5) is tied for the team lead in assists and tied for second on the team in points. The Johnston, Iowa, native joins Ted Purcell as the second former Rider in as many weeks to take home Hockey East Rookie of the Week honors.
Before heading to Northeastern, Costello enjoyed a standout 2005-06 season with the RoughRiders. He was named to the All-United States Hockey League Second Team after setting club records for most goals (31) and most points (76) in one season. Costello led the USHL in point scoring and finished third in goals and assists (45).
This year’s edition of the RoughRiders (4-3-0, 8 points) is in second place in the USHL’s East Division, four points behind the division-leading Waterloo Black Hawks. The Riders return to action with a pair of games this weekend. The Riders will visit the Sioux Falls Stampede Friday night before returning home to meet the Lincoln Stars Saturday evening at 7:05PM.
