RoughRiders’ Wingels Named ServiceMaster 380/USHL Offensive Player of the Week

Cedar Rapids RoughRiders forward Tommy Wingels has been named ServiceMaster 380/United States Hockey League Offensive Player of the Week.

Wingels, 18, scored two goals and picked up three assists as the Riders’ split a pair of games with the Des Moines Buccaneers last weekend.

“Tommy has come in and worked hard and done a good job of adapting to the USHL,” said RoughRiders Coach and General Manager Mark Carlson.

Wingels scored his first career USHL goal and added an assist last Friday in a 7-6 loss to the Buccaneers in Urbandale. One night later on home ice, he scored another goal and collected a pair of assists as the Riders rebounded to hand the Bucs an 8-3 loss- Des Moines’ first defeat of the season.

In seven games this season, Wingels has scored two goals and picked up six assists for a total of eight points. He joins Jacob Cepis as the second Rider to earn Player of the Week honors in just the last three weeks.

Wingels, a Miami of Ohio recruit, was selected by the RoughRiders in the second round of the September, 2005 USHL Futures Draft with the fifteenth overall pick. The Wilmette, Illinois, native played midget hockey for Team Illinois last season.

Wingels and the RoughRiders (4-3-0, 8 points) are in second place in the USHL’s East Division, four points behind the division-leading Waterloo Black Hawks. The Riders return to action with a pair of games this weekend. The Riders will visit the Sioux Falls Stampede Friday night before returning home to meet the Lincoln Stars Saturday evening at 7:05PM.
