Game Summary: November 19, 2004- Lincoln 5 RoughRiders 4 (so)

J.J. Koehler converted the deciding penalty shot to give the Lincoln Stars a wild 5-4 shootout win over the host RoughRiders Saturday night. The Riders did earn one point for the shootout defeat and saw Jon Grabarek pick up one goal and one assist to tie Chase Watson’s team career point scoring record (97).

Koehler put the puck past RoughRider goaltender Alex Stalock to give the Stars a 3-2 lead in the shootout. Greg Collins then had a chance to tie it with the Riders fifth and final penalty shot, but he was denied by Lincoln netminder Jordan Pearce.

Lincoln’s Shawn Gawrys and Mike Kramer had scored on their penalty shots to give the Stars a leg up earlier in the shootout, but the Riders twice battled back to knot it up on goals from Rob Ricci and Matt Vokes.

The game only reached the shootout after the Riders’ Grabarek and Vokes peppered the Lincoln net but were unable to score during a Rider power play in the final minute of overtime.

It was the Riders who survived a scare in the final seconds of regulation as first Stalock and then Vokes- a forward- made desperation saves to keep the game tied at four.

John Swanson’s goal with 1:37 left in regulation made the score 4-4. Swanson snapped home a Jared Boll centering pass from the slot for his second goal of the night.

Swanson’s goal enabled the Stars to rebound after the Riders had stormed back with three third period goals to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 lead.

Jordan Pietrus triggered the comeback with a shorthanded goal at 3:33 of the third. Pietrus picked off the puck and fired a wrist shot just inside the post from the high slot to narrow the Lincoln lead to 3-2.

The Riders tied the score at 9:42 when Grabarek finished off a nifty combination passing play. Erik Felde set up the goal by taking Brandon Svendsen’s drop pass at the top of the right circle, spinning and backhanding to Grabarek on the doorstep.

Ted Purcell’s goal (his second of the game) at 14:19 of the third period gave the Riders their first lead of the night. Grabarek’s shot from the left wing circle broke off Pearce into the crease and Purcell swept it into the gaping net.

The Stars had better of the first two periods. Lincoln took a 2-1 lead into the second and extended the advantage to 3-1 when Jared Boll charged down the right wing and swooped around the Rider net to score with a wraparound.

It had seemed almost certain that the Riders would head into the first intermission down 2-0 but Purcell scored with just 2.8 seconds left in the opening period trim the Lincoln lead to one. Purcell walked off the end boards into the slot and fired a backhander under the crossbar to get the Riders on the scoreboard.

The Stars had jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Dan Riedel and Swanson. Reidel shot a Linus Klassen centering pass under Stalock to open the scoring at 6:04.

Swanson doubled the lead when he batted a carom off the back glass out of mid air and into the net from the edge of the crease at 10:27.
