The Riders defeated the Indiana Ice 5-4 last Tuesday in <st1:City w:st="on">Indianapolis</st1:City>, dropped the Des Moines Buccaneers 7-4 last Friday in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Urbandale</st1:City></st1:place> and drubbed the Green Bay Gamblers 6-0 Saturday evening on home ice.<o:p></o:p> Aided by <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on">Indiana</st1:State></st1:place>’s three game losing streak, the Riders have now opened up a six point lead over the Ice in the race for the top spot in the east. The Riders are the only team in the division with a winning record.<o:p></o:p> The Riders once again demonstrated their offensive explosiveness last week. The Riders scored 18 goals in their three wins and rang up 13 in Friday and Saturday night’s games. Balance has been a hallmark of the Rider attack. 14 Riders contributed at least one point in last Friday’s win, while 13 different players registered points the following evening.<o:p></o:p> After failing to score a first period goal in seven straight games following opening night, the Riders have scored twelve first period goals in their last six games.<o:p></o:p> Alex Stalock made 23 saves on the way to his first USHL shutout Saturday night. The Riders held the Gamblers off the scoreboard after giving up at least four goals in each of their prior four games.<o:p></o:p> The Riders’ three wins last week came over East Division opponents. The Riders have gone 10-1 against the east this season but have gone winless in their first three games against teams from the West Division (0-2-1) heading into this weekend’s games against western stalwarts Lincoln and Tri-City. Overall, West Division teams have gone <st1:date w:st="on" Month="6" Day="26" Year="2002">26-6-2</st1:date> in games against their eastern counterparts so far this season.<o:p></o:p> Last Saturday’s win was the Riders’ third in a row at home. The victory kicked off a four game home stand, the Riders’ longest so far this season.<o:p></o:p> After scoring a pair of goals over the weekend, Jon Grabarek is within two points of Chase Watson’s team career point scoring record (97). <o:p></o:p> <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Lincoln</st1:City></st1:place> won back-to-back home games last weekend. The Stars defeated the Sioux City Musketeers 6-4 Friday night and edged <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City></st1:place> 3-2 Saturday evening. Those wins came after the Stars had gone winless (0-2-1) in their prior three games. With last weekend’s victories, the Stars are just one point behind division leading <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City></st1:place> in the west.<o:p></o:p> <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Lincoln</st1:City></st1:place>’s Jared Boll provides a formidable on-ice presence. The second year forward leads the USHL in both goals (12) and penalty minutes (106). The Stars spend more time in the penalty box (27.4 minutes per game) than any other team in the league.<o:p></o:p> Like the RoughRiders, Tri-City also enters this week riding a three game winning streak. The Storm swept a pair games from <st1:State w:st="on">Indiana</st1:State> last weekend in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Kearney</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">Nebraska</st1:State></st1:place>. The Storm defeated the Ice 4-2 Friday evening and 5-2 on Saturday night. Tri-City has gone 5-2 in seven games since enduring a five game winless streak last month.<o:p></o:p> The Storm remains in the West Division basement, two points behind fourth place <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux Falls</st1:City></st1:place>, despite having won more games that it has lost.<o:p></o:p> Saturday’s game at the ice arena will cap off a stretch of three road games in four days for the Storm. Ricci scored with just 2.8 seconds left in the first period to snap a 2-2 tie and give the Riders a lead they would never relinquish. The Riders led <st1:time w:st="on" Hour="14" Minute="5">5-4 after two</st1:time> and then put the Bucs away with third period goals from Ted Purcell and Svendssen. Chris Zarb scored the other Storm goal. The Storm trailed 1-0 after one period, but scored three straight goals to take control of the game. Markovic’s empty net goal with 38 seconds left finished off <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Indiana</st1:place></st1:State> after the Ice had cut the Storm lead to 3-2 at <st1:time w:st="on" Hour="16" Minute="22">16:22</st1:time> of the third period.
