RoughRiders Drop Sioux City 5-3 to Clinch Buc Bowl

The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders closed out the Buc Bowl Saturday with a tournament-clinching 5-3 win over the Sioux City Musketeers. The Riders finished the United States Hockey League’s annual preseason showcase with a tournament best 3-0-0 record.

The Riders jumped out to a 4-0 lead against the Musketeers on the way to a win that enabled Cedar Rapids to finish the preseason with a 4-1-0 record The Riders took a 1-0 lead on Jacob Cepis’s superb solo rush as 11:06 of the first period.

The Riders then struck twice in sixteen seconds to stretch the lead to 3-0. Andy Miele scored the second Cedar Rapids goal on the power play at 15:44. The Riders found the net again when Rob Bordson banked the puck past Sioux City goaltender Jerry Kuhn at the sixteen minute mark of the opening period.

Kevin Wehrs made it 4-0 when he drove the puck home from the right wing circle at 3:12 of the second period.

At 12:35 of the second Andrew Rowe got the Musketeers on the scoreboard for the first time when he stuffed the puck home from the side of the net.

Even after Mike Seidel scored the Riders’ second power play goal from the doorstep at 8:27 of the third period, Sioux City did not fold.

Instead, the Musketeers responded with back-to-back power play goals just under three minutes apart as Max Pacioretty at 10:17 and Eddie Olczyk at 13:09 found the net to trim the Rider lead to 5-3.

The Musketeers would get no closer despite peppering Rider goaltender Pat McGann with 23 third period shots. McGann made better than half of his game total of 41 saves in the third period alone.
