The RoughRiders hung on for a 6-5 shootout win over the Omaha Lancers after jumping out to a 4-0 lead Thursday at the Buc Bowl preseason tournament.
The Riders outscored the Lancers 2-0 in the shootout as Andy Miele and Mike Seidel converted penalty shots. Pat McGann, who made 30 saves in regulation, stopped all four Omaha penalty shots.
Early on it appeared the Riders might roll to a comfortable win. Cedar Rapids first took the lead just 1:56 into the first period when Paul Zanette scored from close range.
Tommy Wingels scored from the doorstep to make it 2-0 at 13:12 of the first. Wingels converted a second chance after Omaha goaltender Scott Gudmandson stopped Wingels’ initial bid.
The Riders stretched the lead to three goals when Jacob Cepis scored on a shorthanded breakaway at 14:56.
The Cedar Rapids onslaught continued early in the second period when Andy Miele walked in alone to score off an Omaha turnover and make it 4-0 at the 4:04 mark.
Midway through the second the Lancers battled back to cut the Rider lead in half with power play goals just over two minutes apart from Robby Dee and Ben Arnt.
Omaha’s Travis Novak scored just after the end of a Lancer man advantage to trim the gap to 4-3 at 13:04 of the middle frame.
The Riders regained a two goal lead when Wingels scored his second of the game by poking the puck between Gudmandson’s pads at the 14:59 mark of the second.
The respite proved to be a brief one for the Riders as Omaha’s Jarmo Jokila found the back of the Cedar Rapids net just 38 seconds into the third period to again trim the Rider advantage to a single goal.
Jokila would dramatically strike again to tie the game with just 12 second left in regulation. The Lancers, already on a 5-on-3 power play, pulled Gudmandson to create a rare 6-on-3 advantage in the final minute. Omaha cashed in on the man power advantage when Jokila buried a rebound from the goalmouth to even the score at five.
