David Boehm scored two goals and added one assist as the host RoughRiders rolled to a 6-2 preseason win over the Des Moines Buccaneers Saturday night.
The Riders broke the game open with three second period goals. Cedar Rapids entered the second already up 2-1 and did not wait long before extending the lead to two. The Riders were on a two man advantage when Rob Bordson converted a Doug Jones centering pass to double the margin at the 2:20 mark.
Just over six minutes later, Boehm stretched the Rider lead to three with the prettiest goal of the night. Leading a 3-on-1 jailbreak, Jacob Cepis centered to Aaron Bogosian, who relayed the puck to Boehm for the close range finish.
Boehm and Bogosian clicked again with just 20 seconds left in the second period to make it a 5-1 game. This time it was Boehm who acted as provider, teeing the puck up in the high slot and enabling Bogosian to snap a wrist shot past Buc goaltender Mike Dalton.
At 7:18 of the third period Boehm scored his second goal on a clean breakaway to make it 6-1.
The Bucs’ Jeff Petry scored a 5-on-3 power play goal at 16:42 of the third- by which time the game had long since been decided.
Early on, the Riders had hinted at things to come by scoring twice in the opening 72 seconds of the contest. Jacob Cepis snapped the puck home off a Tomi Stahlhammar faceoff win to give the Riders a 1-0 lead just 17 seconds in.
A mere 55 seconds later the Riders doubled the advantage while on the power play. Scott Wietecha’s blast from the right point sailed past Dalton to make it 2-0.
The Bucs bounced back to get on the scoreboard for the first time when Rody Selk buried a goalmouth feed from Nate Dewhurst at the 6:34 mark of the first.
After that the Bucs met with little success in trying to solve Rider goaltender Pat McGann. McGann finished the night with 38 saves.
