RoughRiders, Jaycees Team Up For Monthly Food Drive To Benefit HACAP

August 27, 2004 - The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and the Cedar Rapids Jaycees will team up this season for monthly food drives to benefit the HACAP Food Reservoir, the RoughRiders announced today.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p> The Jaycees will collect canned food items at the RoughRiders’ first Saturday home game of each month. The RoughRiders’ first food drive night of the season is the team’s home opener Saturday, October 16 when the defending United States Hockey League champion Waterloo Black Hawks visit the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.<o:p></o:p> “This is a new initiative that we’re very much looking forward to,” said RoughRiders Vice President of Operations Jim Calpin. “We’re very excited about being able to take a stronger role in the community.” <o:p></o:p> The <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Cedar Rapids</st1:City></st1:place> chapter of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) is a community-based leadership training organization for men and women age 21-39. Through serving the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Cedar Rapids</st1:City></st1:place> area in a variety of projects and programs, young people have the opportunity to develop their leadership and business skills. The Jaycees are the organization of choice for young men and women who want the best opportunities for leadership development, volunteerism and community service.<o:p></o:p> “We are excited to join forces with the Roughriders in our efforts to benefit the HACAP Food Reservoir,” said Cedar Rapids Jaycees Community Development Vice President Tony Tomash. “As a dedicated Roughrider fan I am confident that loyal fans will show equal dedication in assisting less fortunate individuals in our community. The food drive is another fine example of the Roughriders commitment to the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Cedar Rapids</st1:City></st1:place> community both on and off the ice.”<o:p></o:p> HACAP- Hawkeye Area Community Action Program, Inc.- is celebrating its thirty-eighth year of providing services to eliminate the causes of poverty in <st1:City w:st="on">Benton</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">Iowa</st1:State>, Johnson, Jones, Linn and <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on">Washington</st1:State></st1:place> counties. The mission of HACAP is to promote economic and emotional strength toward a goal of self-sufficiency for disadvantaged people in our communities.<o:p></o:p> The HACAP Food Reservoir is a member of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">America</st1:country-region></st1:place>’s Second Harvest Food Bank Network. The Food Reservoir channels donated products to area soup kitchens, pantries, homeless shelters, day care centers and other nonprofit food programs that feed the needy.<o:p></o:p> The RoughRiders will open their sixth season on Saturday, September 25 when they visit the Des Moines Buccaneers. 2004-05 season tickets are currently available through the RoughRiders’ business office (247-0340). Fans who pay for season tickets in full before August 31 will receive a 10% discount in addition to a host of other benefits available exclusively to season ticket holders. <o:p></o:p>Over their first five seasons, the Riders have secured a place as one of the top organizations in the USHL. The RoughRiders are one of just three teams to have reached the USHL playoffs each of the last four seasons and last year set a franchise record for wins in a season. The Riders are also annually among the league leaders in attendance, frequently drawing sellout crowds to the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
