Game Summary: April 1, 2006- RoughRiders 2 Indiana 7

April 1, 2006- Jay Sprague ripped off a natural hat trick as the Indiana Ice scored four second period goals on route to defeating the host RoughRiders 7-2 Saturday night and pushing Cedar Rapids to the brink of elimination in the opening round of the Clark Cup playoffs.

The victory gave the Ice a two games to one lead in the best-of-five series. The Riders must win game four Thursday night in Indianapolis to stay alive and force a fifth and deciding game.

The Ice was on the power play when Todd McIlrath started the second period onslaught at the 7:55 mark. McIlrath wristed the puck home from the side of net to snap a 1-1 tie. McIlrath finished the night with one goal and two assists.

Sprague scored the first of his three straight goals just one minute and 19 seconds later. Sprague doubled the Indiana lead by taking a Brian Gifford feed and sweeping the puck home from the doorstep.

Sprague extended the lead to 4-1 at 15:41 of the second when he pounced on the loose puck in the goalmouth after Rider starting goaltender Al Stalock poke checked McIlrath.

Sprague scored his third goal shorthanded with 1:45 left in the period. He fired the puck past Stalock’s glove hand from the slot to make it 5-1. Stalock (24 saves) was replaced by Pat McGann at the start of the third period.

The Ice made it five straight goals at 4:38 of the third. Indiana was on the power play when Eddie Del Grosso (who also had two assists) wristed the puck past a screened McGann to stretch the lead to 6-1.

Approaching the midway point of the third the Riders went on the power play and then rolled the dice by removing McGann in favor of an extra attacker to create a 6-on-4 advantage- an edge the Riders were able to turn into a goal when Gary Steffes tipped in a David Strathman shot for his and the team’s second of the night.

With Indiana back to full strength, the Riders would twice more empty the net for an extra skater, but it would be the Ice who benefited when Alex Laseen buried the puck in the gaping Cedar Rapids goal at 12:21 of the third to make it 7-2.

The Ice had gotten their night off to a solid start when Mike Hull opened the scoring from close range at 9:05 of the first period. Steffes buried a loose puck from the slot to tie score at one at 18:18 of the opening frame. After that goal, however, the Riders had little enough to celebrate the rest of the way.

While his teammates were breaking loose at the other end, Steve Jakiel turned in a strong performance in the Ice net. Jakiel stopped 43 shots before being replaced with just over two and a half minutes remaining by Cody Reichart.
