East Division<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> COMING IN<o:p></o:p> The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders will try to bounce back this week after suffering their first back-to-back losses of the season last weekend.  The Riders fell in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Omaha</st1:place></st1:City> 6-4 on Friday and in Tri-City 5-1 on Saturday after having lost just once in regulation in nine games prior to last weekend.  <o:p></o:p> Last weekend’s setbacks allowed the Indiana Ice to move into a tie with the Riders for first place in the United States Hockey League’s East Division.  The Riders will bid to reclaim sole possession of the top spot in the east when they visit <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Indiana</st1:place></st1:State> tomorrow night.  The Riders and Ice are three points ahead of third place <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Chicago</st1:place></st1:City>.<o:p></o:p> Tomorrow night’s contest will be the Riders’ third in a stretch that will see them play five times in nine days.  <o:p></o:p> The Riders were unbeaten in regulation on the road before last weekend’s defeats.  The Riders will complete a stretch of four consecutive road games with their trips to <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Indiana</st1:place></st1:State> and <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:place></st1:City> this week.  Saturday night the RoughRiders will play their first home game of November.<o:p></o:p> Last weekend’s losses dropped the RoughRiders’ record against West Division opponents to 0-2-1 this season.  This week the Riders face three East Division foes.  West Division teams have gone <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2001" Day="22" Month="5">22-5-1</st1:date> in games against their eastern counterparts so far this season.<o:p></o:p> The six goals the Riders gave up last Friday were a season high.  The eleven goals the Riders surrendered on the weekend were the most they have conceded in back to back games this season.<o:p></o:p> The Riders equaled their low goal output of the season last Saturday and also set new season lows for shots on goal (16) in one game and one period (3 in the first) last Saturday.  <o:p></o:p> One of the keys to the RoughRiders’ early success has been a balanced attack.  13 Riders have recorded at least three points and 18 skaters have notched at least one point.  Only three skaters- Chase Ryan, Brent Cornelius and Kyle Solomon- have not yet registered a point.  16 different Riders have scored goals.<o:p></o:p> After failing to score a first period goal in seven straight games following opening night, the Riders have scored five first period goals in their last three games.<o:p></o:p> The Riders were outscored 5-0 in the third period of their two games last weekend.<o:p></o:p> <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Indiana</st1:place></st1:State> split a pair of home games last weekend.  The Ice suffered its first regulation home loss of the season last Friday, falling to <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Chicago</st1:place></st1:City> 5-2.  <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Indiana</st1:place></st1:State> rebounded with a 3-1 win over <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:place></st1:City> one night later.<o:p></o:p> The Ice and RoughRiders are the only two East Division teams with winning records.<o:p></o:p> <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Indiana</st1:place></st1:State>’s Todd McIlrath is the hottest player in the USHL.  McIlrath is in the midst of a nine game point scoring streak (<st1:date w:st="on" Year="2017" Day="12" Month="5">5-12-17</st1:date>), the longest such streak in the league this season.<o:p></o:p>             <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:place></st1:City>’ dramatic 5-4 overtime win over <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Sioux Falls</st1:place></st1:City> last Friday was just the Buccaneers’ second of the season and their first in nearly a month.  Prior to overcoming the Stampede, the Bucs hadn’t won since defeating <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:place></st1:City> 7-1 on October 8.  The Bucs’ fortunes were reversed Friday night as a <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:place></st1:City> goal in the final seconds of regulation consigned <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:place></st1:City> to a heart breaking 3-2 loss. <o:p></o:p> The Bucs have been competitive most nights this season.  The majority of their games- seven of 13- have been decided by one goal.  The Bucs have been especially pesky at Buccaneer Arena.  They have earned points from five of their seven home games, picking up two wins, one overtime loss and two shootout defeats.<o:p></o:p> <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:place></st1:City> went 1-2 in three road games last weekend.  After a 4-2 win in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:place></st1:City> last Friday, the Gamblers lost 3-1 in <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Indiana</st1:place></st1:State> on Saturday and 4-3 in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Chicago</st1:place></st1:City> Sunday.  <o:p></o:p> On the season, the Gamblers have gone just 1-5 on the road and will play three road games in three days again this weekend.  <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:place></st1:City> travels <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:place></st1:City> Thursday and <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Sioux Falls</st1:place></st1:City> Friday before finishing its sojourn Saturday night at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.  <o:p></o:p> The Gamblers have had their struggles defensively.  <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:place></st1:City> has surrendered 54 goals this season, far and away the most in the league.  The Gamblers also have the largest negative goal differential in the USHL (-18).  Special teams have not offered much relief for <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Green Bay-</st1:place></st1:City> the Gamblers are the poorest penalty killing team in the league (78.3%).<o:p></o:p> <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:place></st1:City> has benefited from the services of top scorer Blake Wheeler (<st1:date w:st="on" Year="2013" Day="7" Month="6">6-7-13</st1:date>).  Wheeler was chosen fifth overall in June’s National Hockey League draft by the Phoenix Coyotes.  Wheeler is the highest NHL draft pick to <st1:time w:st="on" Minute="57" Hour="8">8:57</st1:time> of the third period and the Lancers went on to a 6-4 win over the RoughRiders.  The Riders jumped in front 2-0 on first period goals by Ted Purcell and Erik Felde.  The lead evaporated as the Riders surrendered three goals in the first <st1:time w:st="on" Minute="53" Hour="15">3:53</st1:time> of the second period.  Matt Vokes twice tied the score in the second period, but the Riders struggled to generate chances in the third period (four shots).  Dan Tormey started the game in goal but was replaced by Alex Stalock after giving up the first four <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Omaha</st1:place></st1:City> goals.  Stalock took the loss despite surrendering just one goal.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Saturday, November 6: Hour="10">10:33</st1:time> of the first period, but the Storm scored the first of five unanswered goals just eight seconds later and to turn the momentum in their favor.  Alex Stalock (30 saves) helped keep the Riders close until the Storm scored three times in 3:49 in the third period to put the game away.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place Friday, November 5: <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:place></st1:City> 5  Sioux Falls 4 (OT)<o:p></o:p> Ryan Raven (one goal and one assist) scored at <st1:time w:st="on" Minute="32" Hour="13">1:32</st1:time> of overtime to give the Buccaneers a dramatic come from behind win.  <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:place></st1:City> trailed 4-2 with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation before rallying with a pair of goals.  Sam Kelly brought the Bucs within one at <st1:time w:st="on" Minute="54" Hour="13">13:54</st1:time> of the third.  Still trailing by one late in the third period, the Bucs pulled goaltender Pat Watson, a gamble that paid off when Matt Greer scored to tie the game with just 50 seconds left.  Phil Pinter and Chad Rau scored the other <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:place></st1:City> goals in a game the Bucs never led until the end.  Watson entered the game in the third period after starter A.J. Bucchino gave up the fourth <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Sioux Falls</st1:place></st1:City> goal.  Watson made just two saves to earn the win.<o:p></o:p> Saturday, November 6: <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:place></st1:City> 3  <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:place></st1:City> 2<o:p></o:p> One night after pulling off a dramatic comeback of their own, it was the Buccaneers who were unable to hold a 2-1 lead late in the third period.  Tim Kennedy scored the game winning goal with just seven seconds left in regulation to give the Musketeers the win.  Blake Martin had tied the score for <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:place></st1:City> with just <st1:time w:st="on" Minute="4" Hour="15">3:04</st1:time> remaining.  The Bucs had jumped in front 2-0 on goals from Chad Rau and Phil Pinter.   Pat Watson (32 saves) suffered the heartbreaking loss in goal.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p>
