Stalock Earns Let’s Play Hockey/USHL Defensive Player of the Week Honors, Ties RoughRider Win Record

March 15, 2006- Cedar Rapids RoughRiders goaltender Al Stalock yesterday was named Let’s Play Hockey/United States Hockey League Defensive Player of the Week and last night tied a team record by picking his twenty-seventh win of the season as the Riders defeated the Indiana Ice 4-2 in Indianapolis.

Stalock, 18, earned Player of the Week honors after giving up just seven goals and making 103 saves while backstopping the Riders to three wins last week. Stalock made 34 saves in the Riders’ 5-3 win over Indiana last Tuesday, stopped 37 shots in a 4-3 victory over Waterloo last Friday and turned aside 32 shots in a 4-1 defeat of Green Bay last Saturday.

With last night’s victory, Stalock improved his record on the season to 27-11-2 and tied the team single season record for wins originally set by Bobby Goepfert, who went 27-16-5 in 2001-02. Stalock stopped 38 Indiana shots on the way to what was his fourth straight win, a victory that propelled the Riders into first place in the USHL’s East Division.

“Al’s certainly done an excellent job of competing for us not just over the last week but since he first arrived in Cedar Rapids,” said Riders Coach and General Manager Mark Carlson.

On the season, Stalock leads the league in wins, save percentage (.931) and total saves (1366), ranks second in minutes played (2397:06), is tied for fourth in shutouts (3) and is tied for sixth in goals against average (2.55).

This marks the third time this season that Stalock has been named Defensive Player of the Week. The South St. Paul, Minnesota, native also claimed the award following the opening week of the season and took home the hardware again in January. He was also named the USHL’s December Goaltender of the Month.

This is Stalock’s second season with the RoughRiders. He went 19-9-3 with a 2.73 goals against average, a .905 save percentage and one shutout last year. In the playoffs, Stalock backstopped the Riders to the first Clark Cup title in club history, turning in a 7-2-0 record, a 1.44 goals against average, a .950 save percentage and one shutout.

The Riders originally acquired Stalock in July of 2004 in a trade with the Sioux Falls Stampede. Stalock will begin his college career at Minnesota-Duluth next season.

The Riders (32-18-5, 69 points) return to action with a pair of home games this weekend. The Riders face the Tri-City Storm Friday evening and will take on the Lincoln Stars Saturday night. Both games face off at 7:05PM
