Game Summary: March 7, 2006- RoughRiders 5 Indiana 3
<p>March 7, 2006- Cedar Rapids RoughRiders forwards Ted Purcell and Chad Costello both made team history as the host RoughRiders scored a wild 5-3 win over the Indiana Ice Tuesday night.</p>
<p>With one goal and one assist on the night, Purcell set a new team record for most career points and tied the Cedar Rapids record for most assists in a single season. Costello collected three assists to break the club record for most points in one season.</p>
<p>Purcell and Costello set new team standards simultaneously by combining for the first goal of the game at 5:48 of the opening period. By firing a Costello centering pass home, Purcell collected his one hundredth thirtieth career point for Cedar Rapids, surpassing the old record of 129 points set by Jon Grabarek. </p>
<p>Second period goals from Ryan Gunderson and David Strathman (on the power play) enabled the Riders to take a seeming comfortable 3-0 lead into the third period.</p>
<p>However, the Ice would explode for three goals in just over three minutes early in the third to tie the score. Todd McIlrath got Indiana on the scoreboard at 1:33 of the third. Just 23 seconds later, McIlrath scored on a breakaway to narrow the gap to one. </p>
<p>Eric Olimb’s power play goal completed the rally and deadlocked the game at three at the 4:36 mark of the third.</p>
<p>The Riders responded by getting up off the canvas to retake the lead at 9:51 of the third on Strathman’s second power play goal. By setting up Strathman for the tie breaker, Purcell picked up his forty-seventh assist of the season, tying his own team record.</p>
<p>The Riders survived a late scare after Phil Axtell was assessed a major penalty for charging at 15:17 of third, a penalty that enabled the Ice to finish the game on the power play. The Ice emptied the net with 2:32 left in regulation, replacing goaltender Cody Reichart with an extra attacker and creating a 6-on-4 advantage. Indiana’s gamble backfired, however, when Ray Kaunisto scored a shorthanded empty net goal to finish of Indiana with 1:21 remaining.</p>
