RoughRiders Clinch Sixth Street Playoff Berth As Chicago Downs Waterloo

March 3, 2006- The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders tonight clinched their sixth straight berth in the United States Hockey League’s Clark Cup playoffs thanks to the Chicago Steel’s 6-5 shootout win over the host Waterloo Black Hawks.

The Riders, who were idle tonight, have a 28-16-5 record and are in second place in the USHL’s East Division with 61 points. Waterloo’s loss this evening guaranteed that the Riders can finish no worse than fourth in the division.

“Our guys have worked very hard to reach this point and this is certainly a well deserved reward for their efforts,” said RoughRiders coach Mark Carlson. “At the same time we know we still have plenty of work still ahead of us and a lot more that we want to accomplish.”

While there is a mathematical- if not realistic- chance that the Riders and Black Hawks could finish tied for fourth place, the Riders would win the tie breaker in that scenario by virtue of having already clinched the season series between the two teams.

The Riders have played 49 games- they have only wrapped up a playoff spot earlier in a season once before. They clinched a postseason berth after 41 games last year and went on to win the Clark Cup for the first time in team history.

The Riders join the Sioux Falls Stampede and the Des Moines Buccaneers as the third USHL team to qualify for the playoffs this year.

The Riders are as yet the only team in the league to have made the playoffs each of the last six years. Two other teams, the Omaha Lancers and Sioux City Musketeers, have a chance to extend their playoff qualification streaks to at least six years should they reach the postseason.

The Riders, who were idle tonight, return to action tomorrow evening in Waterloo. The Riders will travel to Sioux Falls to meet the Stampede Sunday night before returning home to take on the Indiana Ice next Tuesday at 7:05PM.

Tickets for all RoughRiders home games- including next Tuesday’s- can be purchased in person at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office, over the phone at (319) 261-4625 or on line at www.roughridershockey.com. The ticket office is open from noon to 5:00PM on weekdays and from noon through the end of the second period on game days, including this Saturday. Ticket prices ranges from $7 to $17, including a 50-cent facility fee.
