Rider Alum Howells Named CCHA Defensive Player of the Week
<p>February 21, 2006- Former Cedar Rapids RoughRider Tyler Howells, now a junior defenseman at Michigan State, has been named Central Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week.</p>
<p>Howells, 22, earned the honor after scoring one goal and picking up three assists in Michigan State’s two game sweep of second-ranked Miami (Ohio) last weekend. Howells assisted on one goal in the Spartans’ 3-2 win over the Red Hawks last Friday and had a hand in all three MSU goals- scoring one and assisting on the other two- in a 3-1 victory last Saturday. The Eden Prairie, Minnesota, native also posted a plus/minus rating of +3 for the weekend.</p>
<p>Howells (10-21-31), who is tied for the team lead in assists, has helped the fifth-ranked Spartans to a 19-10-7 overall record and a 13-7-6 conference mark.</p>
<p>The versatile Howells played forward for the RoughRiders in 2002-03. Howells led the team in goals (22) and ranked second in points (41) while playing 59 games for the Riders.</p>
<p>Along with forward Justin Abdelkader and defenseman Chris Snavely (who scored his first goal of the season in the Spartans’ win last Saturday), Howells is one of three former Riders now playing for Michigan State. </p>
<p>The RoughRiders (25-16-5, 55 points) are tied for second place in the United States Hockey League’s East Division. The Riders will visit the division-leading Des Moines Buccaneers Wednesday evening before returning home to take on the Indiana Ice Friday night at 7:05PM.</p>
<p>Tickets for all RoughRiders home games- including Friday’s- can be purchased in person at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office, over the phone at (319) 261-4625 or on line at www.roughridershockey.com. The ticket office is open from noon to 5:00PM on weekdays and from noon through the end of the second period on game days, including this Saturday. Ticket prices ranges from $7 to $17, including a 50-cent facility fee.</p> |
