RoughRiders’ Costello Named Let’s Play Hockey/USHL Offensive Player of the Week

February 15, 2006- Cedar Rapids RoughRiders forward Chad Costello has been named Let’s Play Hockey/United States Hockey League Offensive Player of the Week.

Costello, 19, earned the honor after scoring three goals and adding two assists in two games last weekend.

“Chad worked very hard and showed a lot of determination over the weekend as he has throughout the season,” said RoughRiders Coach and General Manager Mark Carlson. Costello had a hand in all three Cedar Rapids goals in the Riders’ 4-3 loss to the Tri-City Storm last Friday night. Costello assisted on a pair of first period goals and scored himself early in the second period

Costello’s two goal effort the following evening helped the Riders’ to a 5-2 win over the Omaha Lancers, a victory that snapped Cedar Rapids’ five game losing streak. Costello scored the game’s first goal on a second period breakaway and provided an empty net goal late in regulation to secure the win.

Costello (24-33-57) leads the league in points, ranks second in assists and is tied for third in goal scoring. The first year Rider has scored nine goals in just his last twelve games.

This marks the second time this season Costello has earned Offensive Player of the Week honors. He also took home the award in December.

Costello was selected by the RoughRiders in the fifth round of the May, 2005 USHL draft with the forty-sixth overall choice after playing for the Wichita Falls Wildcats of the North American Hockey League last season. Costello finished the 2004-05 season tied for eighth in the NAHL in goals (29) and tied for ninth in points (34). He returned to the USHL this season after playing for the Des Moines Buccaneers two years ago. He is the first Iowa native to ever play for the RoughRiders.

Costello earlier this month committed to Northeastern University in Boston, where he will begin his college career next season.

Costello and the RoughRiders (24-15-4, 52 points) are currently in second place in the USHL’s East Division, three points behind the Des Moines Buccaneers. The Riders and Bucs will meet tomorrow night at 7:05 in Cedar Rapids and then complete the home-and-home series Friday evening in Urbandale. With a pair of regulation wins over the Bucs this week, the Riders would take over sole possession of first place in the east. The Riders will play their third game in four days when they visit the Green Bay Gamblers Sunday afternoon.

Tickets for all remaining RoughRider regular season home games- including tomorrow night’s- are now on sale.
