Game Summary: February 3, 2006: RoughRiders 2 Lincoln 7

February 3, 2006- Brent Borgen scored a pair of goals and four other Stars also recorded at least two points as Lincoln rolled to a 7-2 win over the host RoughRiders Friday night.

Like Borgen, the Stars’ Garrett Raboin (three assists), Jared Brown (one goal and one assist), Chris Vandevelde (one goal and one assist) and Kyle Hardwick (two assists) all enjoyed multiple point evenings.

Before the Stars’ offense started rolling, however, it was the Riders who grabbed the early lead. Jacob Cepis converted a goalmouth feed from Andy Miele to put Cedar Rapids up 1-0 at 1:50 of the first period.

The Stars evened the score less than three minutes later. Josh Brodeen’s breakaway goal would prove to be the first of three straight for Lincoln.

Brown tipped in a Hardwick drive to give the Stars a 2-1 lead at 12:09 of the first.

With 1:38 remaining in the opening period and the Stars on the power play, Borgen snapped a Mike Davies centering pass home from the doorstep to make it 3-1.

At 1:52 of the second period, the Riders briefly regained some momentum when Phil Axtell trimmed the Lincoln lead to one. Axtell one-timed a Ted Purcell feed past Lincoln goaltender Bryan Hogan (29 saves) from the side of the net.

Just past the midway point of the second, the Stars took command of the game for good by scoring twice in a span of 20 seconds. Borgen banked the puck in off Rider defenseman David Strathman to make it 4-2 at 11:48.

At 12:08 Ben Grotting gave the Stars a three goal lead and in so doing ended the evening for Rider starting goaltender Al Stalock (16 saves). Pat McGann (7 saves) took over between the posts for Cedar Rapids immediately after Grotting snapped a Justin Milo centering feed into the back of the net.

Just under six minutes into the third period, Vandevelde added to the Riders’ woes by scoring Lincoln’s second power play goal with a one timer from the slot.

Down 6-2 after the Vandevelde goal, the Riders gambled by pulling McGann in favor of an extra attacker with just under six minutes left. The Stars quickly capitalized as J.J. Koehler swept the puck into the empty net from center ice to make it 7-2 at 14:37 of the third.
