RoughRiders Alum Goepfert Named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week
<p>February 1, 2006- Former Cedar Rapids RoughRiders goaltender Bobby Goepfert, now a a junior at St. Cloud State, has been named Red Baron/Western Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week.</p>
<p>Goepfert, 22, made 64 saves while backstopping St. Cloud to back-to-back 2-1 wins at nationally ranked North Dakota last weekend. Goepfert stopped 29 Sioux shots last Friday and last Saturday made 36 saves, including 16 in the first period alone. For the weekend, Goepfert posted a .970 save percentage while surrendering just one even strength goal.</p>
<p>On the season, Goepfert has gone 12-7-3 for the Huskies. The Kings Park, New York, native is tied for seventh in the nation in save percentage (.930), is tied for eighth in shutouts (3) and ranks ninth in goals against average (2.01).</p>
<p>Goepfert, who spent two seasons in Cedar Rapids, still holds nearly every RoughRider single season and career goaltending record. In 96 career games as a Rider, Goepfert went 52-28-9 with a 2.45 goals against average, a .926 save percentage and nine shutouts. In 2001-02, his final season in Cedar Rapids, Goepfert was named United States Hockey League Player of the Year after going 27-16-5 while turning in a 2.04 goals against average, a .936 save percentage and eight shutouts.</p>
<p>Goepfert was a sixth round choice of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2002 National Hockey League draft.</p>
<p>Goepfert is one of more than 50 former RoughRiders who have gone on to the Division I college ranks since the team’s arrival in Cedar Rapids in 1999. 12 current RoughRiders have also already made college commitments. </p>
<p>This year’s edition of the RoughRiders (23-12-4, 50 points) is tied with the Des Moines Buccaneers for first place in the USHL’s East Division. The RoughRiders return to action with a pair of home games this weekend. The Riders meet the Lincoln Stars Friday night and take on the Sioux City Musketeers Saturday evening. Both games start at 7:05.</p>
<p>Tickets for this weekend’s games- and all remaining RoughRider home games- can be purchased in person at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office, over the phone at (319) 261-4625 or on line at www.roughridershockey.com. The ticket office is open from noon to 5:00PM on weekdays and from noon through the end of the second period on game days.
