Month="5">5-6-1</st1:date>, 11 points, 5th place West Division<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> COMING IN<o:p></o:p> The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders hit the road this weekend after defeating the Indiana Ice 4-3 last Saturday night at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.  That win pushed the RoughRiders past <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on">Indiana</st1:State></st1:place> into sole possession of first place in the United States Hockey League’s East Division.  The victory also boosted the Riders’ league best winning percentage to .833.<o:p></o:p> Last Saturday night’s contest marked the end of a three game homestand for the RoughRiders.  The Riders now face four straight road games, starting with this weekend’s trip to <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on">Nebraska</st1:State></st1:place>.<o:p></o:p> The RoughRiders will test themselves against West Division opposition this weekend after playing eight of their first nine games against East Division foes.  In their only previous game against a club from the west, the Riders earned one point for a 5-4 shootout loss to the Stars in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Lincoln</st1:City></st1:place> on October 8.  West Division teams have had a clear edge in interdivisional play so far this season, going <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2000" Day="5" Month="18">18-5-0</st1:date> in 23 games against eastern opposition.<o:p></o:p> One of the keys to the RoughRiders’ early success has been a balanced attack.  Twelve players have recorded at least three points and 18 skaters have notched at least one point.  Only three <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Cedar Rapids</st1:City></st1:place> skaters- Chase Ryan, Brent Cornelius and Kyle Solomon- have not yet registered a point.  16 different Riders have scored, but no one on the roster has more than three goals (Matt Vokes, Brandon Svendsen, Justin Abdelkader, Ted Purcell).<o:p></o:p> After failing to score a first period goal in seven straight games following opening night, the RoughRiders’ finally broke through in the first last Saturday night.  Bishop gave the Riders a 1-0 lead with a goal <st1:time w:st="on" Hour="18" Minute="41">6:41</st1:time> into the game.  That was the RoughRiders first goal in 160:53 of first period action since Ted Purcell scored at <st1:time w:st="on" Hour="17" Minute="48">5:48</st1:time> of the first in the Riders’ September 25 season opener in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City></st1:place>. <o:p></o:p> The Lancers are locked in a tight four team race for the top spot in the West Division.  <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City></st1:place> is tied for second place with the Sioux Falls Stampede, just one point behind the division leading Lincoln Stars.  The Lancers have one game in hand on the Stars.  <st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City> is just two points ahead of fourth place <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City></st1:place>.<o:p></o:p> The Lancers split a pair of games last weekend.  <st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City> won 4-1 in <st1:City w:st="on">Council Bluffs</st1:City> last Friday to end <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City></st1:place>’s three game winning streak.  That defeat was also the Lancers’ first on home ice this season.  <st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City> bounced back with a 5-1 victory over <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> the following evening.<o:p></o:p> The Lancers have performed well in virtually every area early this season.  <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City></st1:place> leads the league in goals scored per game, goals against per game and in power play efficiency.  <o:p></o:p>             The Lancers have suffocated opponents defensively in recent days.  <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City></st1:place> has allowed one or no goals in four of its last five games.        <o:p></o:p>             Former RoughRiders Brandon Naurato and Eddie Neville are now Lancers.  Naurato scored in his <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City></st1:place> debut last Saturday after starting the season on injured reserve because of a shoulder injury.  Neville was with the RoughRiders in preseason but did not make the regular season roster.<o:p></o:p>             Tri-City is in the West Division basement, despite being just one game below .500.  The Storm split a two game series in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:City></st1:place> last weekend.  The Gamblers posted a 5-3 victory last Friday before Tri-City rebounded to win by the same score last Saturday.  <o:p></o:p>             After six straight road games, the Storm will be back on home ice to take on <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City></st1:place> this Friday.  Tri-City went <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2001" Day="3" Month="2">2-3-1</st1:date> during that stretch of six consecutive away games.<o:p></o:p>             The Storm has already suffered a half dozen regulation losses this season after enduring a total of just 12 defeats while posting the league’s best record last season.  Tri-City lost four straight games in regulation during one stretch last month and went winless (0-4-1) in five outings in a row.  Last season the Storm’s longest losing streak was just two games; the longest winless streak a mere three games. <o:p></o:p>             Tri-City has struggled at times this season despite giving up fewer shots than any other team (19.2 per game) and taking an average of 31.3 shots per game.  A team save percentage of just .843 has done the Storm no favors, however.  In contrast, Tri-City skaters have scored on 8 percent of the shots they have taken.  In other words, the Storm has scored one goal for every 12.5 shots taken, while opponents have found the back of the Tri-City net once every 6.4 shots.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> taking the lead on Trevor Smith’s first period goal.  Jeff Lerg (17 saves) suffered the loss in net.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Saturday, October 30: <st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City> 5  <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> 1<o:p></o:p> Brock Bradford (two goals and two assists) and Corey Carlson (one goal and two assists) propelled the explosive Lancers to victory.  All six goals came a span of just <st1:time w:st="on" Hour="9" Minute="43">9:43</st1:time> in the second period.  Bradford and Brandon Naurato scored just 18 seconds apart as the Lancers jumped in front 2-0.  After surrendering the only <st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City> goal, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City></st1:place> scored three more goals in just Kalemba just <st1:time w:st="on" Hour="16" Minute="22">4:22</st1:time> into the first period.  The Storm battled back to tie the game at three in the second period before surrendering a pair of third period goals.  John Mitchell led the Storm attack with one goal and one assist.  Cody Chupp and Chris Zarb scored the other Tri-City goals.  The Storm outshot Green Bay 11-1 in the second period and Jaroslav Markovic and Michal Lukac both had one goal and one assist for Tri-City.  Mario Lamoureux, Mark Bernier and Jarod Palmer notched one goal apiece, while Kyle Kuk picked up three assists.  The
