Game Summary: November 24, 2005- RoughRiders 4 Waterloo 5

November 24, 2005- The host Waterloo Black Hawks held on for a 5-4 win over the RoughRiders after a spirited Rider rally came up just short Thursday night.

Trailing 5-1 in the second period, the Riders scored three unanswered goals to battle back within one. At 16:15 of the second period Phil Axtell began the Riders' late charge with a power play goal. Axtell fired a loose puck home from the slot to narrow the deficit to 5-2.

The Riders pulled within two when Axtell struck again on the man advantage at 5:47 of the third period. This time Axtell buried a Chad Costello centering pass.

When Nik Sellers backhanded a rebound behind Waterloo goaltender Joe Grossman (21 saves) at 8:35, the Riders suddenly found themselves down by just a single goal.

The Rider pressed for a late equalizer but were unable to find the net in the dying moments. Grossman foiled Cedar Rapids' best chance for a tying goal when he stopped Kevin Wehrs in a goalmouth scramble with just under two minutes remaining.

Early on it seemed as if Waterloo might run away with the game- the Black Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than nine minutes into the first period.

Matt Arhontas triggered the early Hawk onslaught by jamming a rebound past Rider netminder Al Stalock (35 saves) just 25 seconds into the game.

The Hawks stretched the lead to three with back-to-back power play goals. Jacob Schuster scored from the side of the net to make it 2-0 at 6:10. At 8:51 of the first Mitch Ryan tipped Vince LoVerde's blue line blast home for the third Waterloo goal.

It was not until the 6:12 mark of the second period that the Riders got on the scoreboard for the first time. David Strathman swept home Costello's cross-crease pass to cut the gap to 3-1 with the first of the Riders' three power play goals.

It took Waterloo little more than two minutes to reestablish the three goal lead as Mike Borisnok snapped a Kyle Reeds centering feed into the back of the net at 8:18 of the second.

Mike Testwuide gave the Hawks their biggest lead of the night when he scored Waterloo's third power goal at 12:23 of the second. Testwuide wristed a rebound past Stalock's blocker to give the Hawks a seemingly comfortable 5-1 advantage.

Box Score
