RoughRiders' Stalock, Steffes Named to U.S. Viking Cup Team
<p>November 18, 2005- The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders' Al Stalock and Gary Steffes have been chosen to play for the USA Hockey Junior Select 18 & Under Team at the prestigious Viking Cup international tournament in Camrose, Alberta, December 26 through January 2.</p>
<p>"It's obviously a great honor for these guys to have the chance to represent their country," said RoughRiders coach and general manager Mark Carlson. "Both Al and Gary are very deserving of selection."</p>
<p>The U.S. will compete against 18-and-under national teams from Finland, Slovakia, Germany and Switzerland, and all-star teams representing the North and South Divisions of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.</p>
<p>Stalock, 18, has gone 7-4-0 this season while posting a 2.56 goals against average and a .923 save percentage. The St. Paul, Minnesota, native is tied for the league lead in wins, ranks fourth in save percentage and ranks sixth in goals against average.</p>
<p>Last year, Stalock went 19-9-3 with a 2.73 goals against average and a .905 save percentage during the regular season. The Minnesota-Duluth recruit went 7-2 in the post season with a sterling 1.44 goals against average and a superb .950 save percentage.</p>
<p>Steffes, 18, is also in his second season in Cedar Rapids. The Grand Blanc, Michigan, product has scored two goals and picked up one assist so far this season.</p>
<p>Steffes, a Miami of Ohio recruit, scored one goal and totaled ten points in 42 regular season games last year. Steffes joined the Riders from the Ontario Hockey Association's Stratford Cullitons just after the start of the 2004-05 season.</p>
<p>Waterloo Black Hawks coach and general manager P.K. O'Handley will coach the U.S. team at the Viking Cup. The U.S.'s only victory in the biannual tournament came in 2000.</p>
<p>The RoughRiders return to action this weekend with a home-and-home series against the Des Moines Buccaneers. The Riders (10-4-0, 20 points) are one point behind the Buccaneers in the race for first place in the USHL's East Division heading into tonight's game against the Bucs at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The two teams will meet again tomorrow evening in Urbandale.</p>
<p>Tickets for all RoughRiders home games- including Friday's- can be purchased in person at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office, over the phone at (319) 261-4625 or on line at www.roughridershockey.com. The ticket office is open from noon to 5:00PM on weekdays and from noon through the end of the second period on game days, including tomorrow.
