Purcell, Stalock, Steffes Named RoughRiders' Assistant Captains
<p>November 17, 2005- Forwards Ted Purcell and Gary Steffes and goaltender Al Stalock have been named Cedar Rapids RoughRiders assistant captains, the RoughRiders announced today.</p>
<p>Purcell, Steffes and Stalock join Jordan Pietrus- who was named team captain last month- in officially assuming leadership roles for the 2004-05 RoughRiders.</p>
<p>"All three of these guys have shown strong leadership qualities," said RoughRiders Coach and General Manager Mark Carlson. "Along with Jordan, I think Teddy, Gary and Al give us a very good group of captains. They are experienced guys who can lead the way both on and off the ice," said Carlson.</p>
<p>Purcell, 20, leads the United States Hockey League in points (24) and is tied for the league lead in assists (16). Last year, in his first season with the Riders, Purcell (20-47-67) was named to the All-USHL Second Team after setting Rider single season record for most points and assists and finishing fourth in the league in point scoring.</p>
<p>The St. John's, Newfoundland, native also set team postseason records for assists (9) and points (14) last spring while helping the Riders to the Clark Cup title. Purcell will begin his college career at Maine next season. </p>
<p>Steffes, 18, is also in his second season in Cedar Rapids. The Grand Blanc, Michigan, product has scored two goals and picked up one assist in 13 games this season.</p>
<p>Steffes, a Miami of Ohio recruit, scored one goal and totaled ten points in 42 regular season games last year. Steffes joined the Riders from the Ontario Hockey Association's Stratford Cullitons just after the start of the 2004-05 season.</p>
<p>Stalock, 18, has gone 7-4-0 this season while posting a 2.56 goals against average and a .923 save percentage. The St. Paul, Minnesota, native is tied for the league lead in wins, ranks fourth in save percentage and ranks sixth in save percentage.</p>
<p>Last year, Stalock went 19-9-3 with a 2.73 goals against average and a .905 save percentage during the regular season. The Minnesota-Duluth recruit went 7-2 in the post season with a sterling 1.44 goals against average and a superb .950 save percentage.</p>
<p>Purcell, Steffes, Stalock and the rest of the RoughRiders return to action this weekend with a home-and-home series against the Des Moines Buccaneers. The Riders (10-4-0, 20 points) are one point behind the Buccaneers in the race for first place in the USHL's East Division heading into this Friday's game against the Bucs at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The two teams will meet again Saturday evening in Urbandale.</p>
<p>Tickets for all RoughRiders home games- including Friday's- can be purchased in person at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office, over the phone at (319) 261-4625 or on line at www.roughridershockey.com. The ticket office is open from noon to 5:00PM on weekdays and from noon through the end of the second period on game days, including tomorrow. Ticket prices range from $7 to $17 including a 50-cent facility fee.</p>
