Grabarek Breaks RoughRider Career Goal Scoring Record

October 23, 2004- Jon Grabarek broke the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders’ career goal scoring record last night as he scored his thirty-ninth goal for the team in a 3-0 win over the Chicago Steel in Bensenville, Illinois.

Grabarek scored an empty net goal with 26.8 seconds left in the game to snap the old record of thirty eight goals he had shared with Gerry Hickey. Grabarek swept the puck from his own end all the way down the ice into the gaping Chicago net to ice the Cedar Rapids win, a victory that extended the RoughRiders’ season opening unbeaten streak to six games.

The record setting goal was Grabarek’s second of the season. He has a total of four points in his last three games after going without a point in the Riders’ first three games.

In addition to breaking the goal scoring record, Grabarek, 20, is also on course to establish new team career records for assists and points this season. The third year forward ranks second in club history behind Chase Watson in both assists (51) and points (90).

Grabarek, a native of Sterling Heights, Michigan, set a RoughRiders single season point scoring record last year as he rang up 22 goals and 35 assists for a total of 57 points. Two years ago, in his first United States Hockey Leage season, Grabarek scored 15 goals and added 14 assists for 29 points.

Grabarek and the RoughRiders return to action tonight at 7:05 as they face the Steel again, this time at the Cedar Ice Arena. The Riders head into this evening’s contest tied with the Indiana Ice for first place in the USHL’s East Division. The RoughRiders are off to the best start in team history. Coach Mark Carlson’s club has gone 5-0-1 for 11 points so far this season. The Riders will complete a full weekend of action when they host the Des Moines Buccaneers tomorrow afternoon at 4:05.

Tickets for all RoughRiders first half home games- including the contests tonight and tomorrow afternoon- are available at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena tickets office.
