Game Summary: October 21, 2005- RoughRiders 3 Chicago 2

October 21,2005- Phil Axtell scored midway through the third period to snap a 2-2 tie and the RoughRiders went on to defeat the host Chicago Steel 3-2 Friday night.

The Riders got what proved to be the game winner when Axtell backhanded a low shot past Chicago goaltender Shaun Williams (37 saves) from the left wing circle at 9:30 of the third.

Axtell's goal capped off a see-saw night. The Riders were first to seize the initiative when, with 6:37 gone in the first period, Chad Costello shoveled a Ted Purcell centering pass home from the edge of the crease to open the scoring.

The Steel bounced back at 15:50 of the first as Joe Loprieno's drive from the top of the right wing circle tied the score at one.

The score remained deadlocked at the end of the first period despite the fact that the Riders outshot Chicago 16-6 in the opening twenty minutes.

The Steel would take the lead with a 5-on-3 power play goal just over six minutes into the second period. Nate Perkovich's backhander from the doorstep put Chicago up 2-1.

The Riders rebounded to tie the game on Nik Sellers' goal at 12:10 of the second. Sellers fired an Even Stephens feed over Williams from close range to knot the score at two apiece and set the stage for Axtell's third period winner.

The Steel pulled Williams in favor of an extra attacker with just over a minute and a half left in regulation, but Cedar Rapids netminder Al Stalock, who made 30 saves on the night and 14 in the third period alone, stood tall to preserve the win.
