October 15, 2005- The host RoughRiders exploded for five second period goals and Al Stalock made 49 saves as the Riders routed the Sioux City Musketeers 8-2 Saturday night.

The scored was tied at one entering the second period, but the Riders took command with a pair of goals just 34 seconds apart in the first minute of the period. A mere 9 seconds into the second, Ray Kaunisto fired a wrist shot past Sioux City starting netminder Phil Tetzlaff from low in the left wing circle to give the Riders a 2-1 lead. 34 seconds later it was 3-1 after Jordan Pietrus drove a Ted Purcell centering pass home along the ice.

Gary Steffes converted a 2-on-1 shorthanded rush to make it 4-1 at 7:50. After the Steffes goal, the Musketeers replaced Tetzlaff in goal with Bill Blase.

The Musketeers responded with a shorthanded goal of their own as Chris Spicer buried an Anthony Maiani feed at 9:32.

The Riders quickly scored two more to erase any Musketeer comeback hopes. Aaron Bendickson rifled the puck under cross bar from the slot to extend the lead to 5-2 at the 12:06 mark. Jacob Cepis finished off the second period Cedar Rapids onslaught with the first of his two goals at 14:41.

The Riders added to the Muskies' misery with two more goals in the third period. Cedar Rapids was on the power play when Phil Axtell batted the puck home from the doorstep at 7:48. Both teams were down to four skaters when Cepis struck again at 9:14, cutting into the slot and backhanding past Blase to make it 8-2.

The Musketeers found themselves on the wrong side of a lopsided scored at the end of a night that actually started fairly well for Sioux City. The Muskies outshot the Riders 23-13 in the first period and had momentum on their side heading into the first intermission after Andrew Rowe jammed the puck in from the side of the net to even the score at one with just 27.5 seconds left in the first.

David Strathman had given the Riders the lead 8:12 into the game when his blue line blast was deflected past Tetzlaff during a Cedar Rapids power play.

The rest of the opening period proved to be the Al Stalock show as the Rider netminder stopped 22 shots in the first twenty-minutes on the way to setting a personal USHL career for saves in one game.

The game grew fractious after the Riders pulled away in the second period. The teams were assessed a total of 129 penalty minutes (67 against Sioux City) including nine major penalties and a match penalty against the Riders' Sergei Kolosov.

Box Score
