RoughRiders' Stalock Named Let's Play Hockey/USHL Defensive Player of the Week

<p>September 27, 2005- Cedar Rapids RoughRiders goaltender Alex Stalock has been named Let's Play Hockey/United States Hockey League Defensive Player of the Week.</p> <p>Stalock, 18, earned the honor after making 41 saves in the Riders' season opening 3-1 win over the Tri-City Storm last Saturday night in Kearney, Nebraska.</p> <p>"Al really went out and competed for us Saturday night and made some big saves," said RoughRiders Coach and General Manager Mark Carlson. "He worked hard during the off-season and in training camp, and I think we're now seeing that hard work pay off."</p> <p>Stalock's 41-save effort Saturday night was a league high during the first week of the season. The South St. Paul, Minnesota native also came within one save of matching his personal USHL career high for most shots stopped in one game. </p> <p>Last year, in his first season with the Riders, Stalock went 19-9-3 with a 2.73 goals against average, a .905 save percentage and one shutout during the regular season. It was during the Riders' drive to the Clark Cup title that Stalock truly shined however. He was named playoff Most Valuable Player after going 7-2 during the postseason while posting a microscopic 1.44 goals against average, a strerling .950 save percentage and on shutout.</p> <p>The Riders acquired Stalock from the Soux Falls Stampede in July, 2004 in exchange for a second round choice in the 2005 USHL draft. Stalock, who starred for South St. Paul High School before making the jump to the USHL, will begin his college career at University of Minnesota-Duluth next season. </p> <p>Stalock and the RoughRiders (1-0-0, 2 points) return to action Saturday night at 7:05 when they visit the Green Bay Gamblers. </p> <p>The Riders will play their home opener Saturday, October 8, at 7:05 against the Gamblers. Prior to the start of the home opener, the RoughRiders will celebrate their historic 2004-05 season by raising Clark Cup, Anderson Cup and East Division championship banners to the rafters of the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The Riders will also conduct a special number retirement ceremony as part of the pregame festivities. </p> <p>In addition, all fans in attendance at the home opener will receive free 2005-06 RoughRiders magnet schedules. </p> <p>Entering their seventh season, the RoughRiders have secured a place as one of the premier organizations in the USHL.
