RoughRiders Open with 3-1 Win Over Tri-City

September 24, 2005- Al Stalock made 41 saves and Ian Slater's second period goal proved to be the game winner as the RoughRiders opened the 2005-06 season with a 3-1 win over the host Tri-City Storm Saturday night.

Slater pounced on a loose puck in the goalmouth to snap a 1-1 tie at 6:04 of the second.

In the third period, Phil Axtell provided a key insurance goal one second after the end of a Rider power play. Defenseman Brett Dickinson chased down the puck in the left wing circle and centered it to Axtell, who fired a shot between the pads of Storm goaltender Nick Hopper to make it 3-1.

The Riders produced the only goal of the third period despite being outshot 21-14 as Stalock stopped everything the Storm threw at the Rider net in the third.

The Storm scored its only goal just 3:18 into the game while on the power play. Brett Watson lifted a backhander over Stalock's left shoulder to give Tri-City a short-lived 1-0 lead.

The Riders were on the power play just over four minutes later when Andy Miele tied the score at one. Miele took a Chad Costello centering feed and tucked a backhander past Hopper from the goalmouth.
