Preseason Game Summary: September 17, 2005- RoughRiders 6 Lincoln 3
<p>September 17, 2005- Three unanswered third period goals propelled the RoughRiders to a 6-3 win over the Lincoln Stars at the Buc Bowl preseason tournament today.</p>
<p>Kevin Wehrs started the third period onslaught for Cedar Rapids. The defenseman swooped into the right wing circle and rifled a wrist shot past Lincoln goaltender Steve Jakiel to snap a 3-3 tie at 9:36 of the third.</p>
<p>With just under six minutes remaining, Dustin Cloutier made it 5-3 when his shot from the slot was deflected over Jakiel's shoulder and into the net.</p>
<p>Jordan Pietrus charged into the goalmouth to bury a Ted Purcell centering pass and extend the Rider lead to 6-3 with two and a half minutes remaining.</p>
<p>The Riders had taken a 3-2 lead into the third, but the Stars' Mike Davies tied the score at three apiece just over three minutes into the period. With Lincoln on the power play, Davies cut in front and tucked a backhander past Stalock for his second goal of the game.</p>
<p>The Riders' Gary Steffes scored the lone goal of the second period. Steffes gave Cedar Rapids a 3-2 lead with 2:17 remaining in the middle frame when he fired the puck under the crossbar from the left wing circle.</p>
<p>The Riders and Stars scored two goals apiece in a fast paced first period. </p>
<p>Lincoln's J.J. Koehler drove the puck home from the doorstep to open the scoring just 88 seconds into the game.</p>
<p>A Chad Costello power play goal evened the score at 10:35. Costello buried a Jacob Cepis centering feed. </p>
<p>Phil Axtell's breakaway goal put the Riders up 2-1 at 14:35. Axtell took a lead pass from Cepis, walked in alone and slipped the puck between Jakiel's pads.</p>
<p>In the final minute of the first, the Stars tied the score at two with a breakway goal of their own. Davies skated in behind the Cedar Rapids defense to beat Rider netminder Al Stalock with a low shot.</p>
<p>With the win, the Riders finish the Buc Bowl with a 2-1 record and wrap up the preseason with a 4-3 mark overall.</p>
<p>The Riders will open the regular season a week from tonight against the Tri-City Storm in Kearney, Nebraska.</p>
