RoughRiders, Jaycees Team Up Again For Food Drives To Benefit HACAP

August 31, 2005- The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and the Cedar Rapids Jaycees will again this season team up for monthly food drives to benefit the HACAP Food Reservoir, the RoughRiders announced today.

The Jaycees will collect canned food items at the RoughRiders' first Saturday home game of each month. The RoughRiders' first food drive night of the season is the team's home opener Saturday, October 8 when the defending United States Hockey League champion RoughRiders welcome the Green Bay Gamblers to the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

"We're very much looking forward to continuing a partnership with the Jaycees and HACAP this season," said RoughRiders Vice President of Operations Jim Calpin. "The Food Drive proved quite successful last season and we're hoping to build on that this season."

Nearly one ton of food was donated to the HACAP Food Reservoir via RoughRiders Food Drive Nights last season.

The Cedar Rapids chapter of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) is a community-based leadership training organization for men and women age 21-40. Through serving the Cedar Rapids area in a variety of projects and programs, young people have the opportunity to develop their leadership and business skills. The Jaycees are the organization of choice for young men and women who want the best opportunities for leadership development, volunteerism and community service.

"Our members are fortunate that our chapter can be involved in a wide variety or projects in the Cedar Rapids community," said Cedar Rapids Jaycees Community Development Vice President Phil Hartgrave. "It is particularly fun to be involved with one of our sports teams, the Rough Riders, while at the same time helping HACAP."

HACAP- Hawkeye Area Community Action Program, Inc.- is celebrating its thirty-ninth year of providing services to eliminate the causes of poverty in Benton, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn and Washington counties. The mission of HACAP is to promote economic and emotional strength toward a goal of self-sufficiency for disadvantaged people in our communities.

The HACAP Food Reservoir is a member of America's Second Harvest Food Bank Network. The Food Reservoir channels donated products to area soup kitchens, pantries, homeless shelters, day care centers and other nonprofit food programs that feed the needy.

The RoughRiders will open the regular season on September 24 when they meet the Tri-City Storm in Kearney, Nebraska.

2005-06 RoughRiders season tickets are currently available through the Riders' business office (247-0340). In addition to their seats, season ticket holders also receive a host of exclusive benefits.

Last season's Clark Cup (playoff) title was the first in RoughRider history. The Riders also claimed a share of the Anderson Cup (regular season) title for the first time ever. The Riders went 42-13-5 last season, the best record in team history.
| Posted on Friday, September 02, 2005 (Archive on Friday, September 02, 2005)
