RoughRiders Add Sellers -- Solomon Departs

August 26, 2005- The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders have added forward Nik Sellers to their roster, while forward Kyle Solomon, who was part of the Riders’ Clark Cup winning squad last season, has been dropped from the team’s protected list, the RoughRiders announced today.

Sellers, 19, joins the RoughRiders after playing for the Soo Indians of the junior A North American Hockey League last season. Sellers (11-37-48) last year led the Indians in assists and points and ranked seventh in the NAHL in assists. Sellers’ move to the Riders marks the Plymouth, Michigan native’s return to the United States Hockey League. Sellers skated in the USHL for the now defunct Danville Wings in 2003-04, picking up four goals and 11 points in 54 games.

“We’re very happy to have Nik on our roster,” said RoughRiders coach and general manager Mark Carlson. “He’s a solid two-way forward with a lot of experience and a very good skill level.”

Solomon, who notched three goals and nine points in 29 games with the RoughRiders last season, will play for the Eastern Junior (B) Hockey League’s Boston Junior Bruins this season.

Sellers will be among 25 players taking to the ice when the defending Clark Cup champion RoughRiders open training camp on Saturday, September 3 at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The Riders will play their first preseason game on Wendesday, September 7 against the arch rival Black Hawks in Waterloo.

The RoughRiders will open the 2005-06 regular season on September 24 when they meet the Tri-City Storm in Kearney, Nebraska. The Riders will open on home ice on Saturday, October 8 when they play host to the Green Bay Gamblers at 7:05PM.

2005-06 RoughRiders season tickets are currently available through the Riders’ business office (247-0340). Fans who pay for season tickets in full before August 31 will receive a discount in addition to a host of other benefits available exclusively to season ticket holders.

Last season’s Clark Cup (playoff) title was the first in RoughRider history. The Riders also claimed a share of the Anderson Cup (regular season) title for the first time ever. The Riders went 42-13-5 last season, the best record in team history.
