RoughRiders’ Grabarek Commits to Wayne State

Cedar Rapids, Iowa- Cedar Rapids RoughRiders forward Jon Grabarek has committed to Wayne State University in Detroit, the RoughRiders announced today. Grabarek will begin his college career in the fall.

“Jon is going to have the chance to be a key contributor at Wayne State,” said RoughRiders coach and general manager Mark Carlson. “He accomplished so much in three seasons here, it’s very gratifying to see him have this opportunity.”

Grabarek, 21, rewrote large portions of the RoughRider career record book during his three seasons in Cedar Rapids. The Sterling Heights, Michigan, native finished his junior career as the team’s all-time leader in career goals (54), assists (75) and points (129). Grabarek played a total of 175 games for the RoughRiders, third most in team history.

Grabarek capped off his United States Hockey League career by helping the Riders to the Clark Cup title last season. He scored 17 goals and totaled 46 points in 59 games in his final Rider campaign and then notched four goals and ten points in eleven playoff games.

Last season Wayne State went 14-17-4 overall and finished fourth in College Hockey America with a 7-9-4 conference record. Grabarek will join another former RoughRider, senior goaltender Matt Kelly, at Wayne State.

Grabarek joins Justin Abdelkader (Michigan State), Phil Axtell (Michigan Tech), Greg Collins (New Hampshire), Ray Eichenlaub (Miami of Ohio), Billy Loupee (Miami of Ohio), Shane Lovdahl (Alaska-Anchorage), Alec Martinez (Miami of Ohio), Zach Miskovic (St. Lawrence), Ted Purcell (Maine), Rob Ricci (Merrimack), Alex Stalock (Minnesota-Duluth), Brandon Svendsen (Bowling Green), Gary Steffes (Miami of Ohio), Dan Tormey (Minnesota State) and Matt Vokes (Brown) as the sixteenth member of the 2004-05 RoughRiders to make a college commitment.

The RoughRiders will open the 2005-06 season on September 24 when they meet the Tri-City Storm in Kearney, Nebraska. The Riders will open on home ice on Saturday, October 8 when they play host to the Green Bay Gamblers at 7:05PM.

2005-06 RoughRiders season tickets are currently available through the Riders’ business office (247-0340). Fans who pay for season tickets in full before August 31 will receive a discount in addition to a host of other benefits available exclusively to season ticket holders.

The RoughRiders last season won the first USHL Clark Cup (playoff) title in team history and also claimed a share of the Anderson Cup (regular season) title for the first time ever. The Riders went 42-13-5 last season, the best record in team history.
