RoughRider/Iowa-Iowa State Hockey Doubleheader October 29

June 29, 2005 - The Clark Cup Champion Cedar Rapids RoughRiders will team up with the Iowa and Iowa State hockey teams for a double header on Saturday, October 29 at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena, the RoughRiders announced today.

The Hawkeyes and Cyclones will face off at 3:30PM. The RoughRiders and Des Moines Buccaneers will complete the twin bill at 7:05PM.

This is the second year in a row that the Riders and Hawkeyes have played a doubleheader at the ice arena. Iowa met the University of Northern Iowa prior to a RoughRiders game last season.

“We’re excited to be working together with the University of Iowa and Iowa State to again this season bring a hockey doubleheader to the fans of eastern Iowa,” said RoughRiders Vice President of Operations Jim Calpin. “Last season’s doubleheader was quite a success and we are happy to be continuing the tradition this season with a game between these two great rivals.”

One ticket will cover admission to both games of the doubleheader. Single game tickets for the 2005-06 season will go on sale on a date to be announced.

The doubleheader will mark the Cyclone hockey team’s first appearance at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

“We think this is the beginning of a great series and a sign of the future,” said Iowa State coach Al Murdoch. “Hockey is the fastest growing sport in the world and Iowa is no exception. We’re excited to be playing at such a great facility for what could turn out to be the championship of college hockey in Iowa.”

Iowa State finished last season twelfth in the American College Hockey Association’s Division I rankings. The Cyclones, who qualified for the ACHA National Tournament, finished the season with a record of 18-19-3.

Last season Iowa won the Division II Mid-American College Hockey Association Silver Division tournament. The Hawkeyes went 14-9-1 overall.

The RoughRiders will open the 2005-06 season on September 24 when they meet the Tri-City Storm in Kearney, Nebraska. The Riders will open on home ice on Saturday, October 8 when they play host to the Green Bay Gamblers at 7:05PM.

2005-06 RoughRiders season tickets are currently available through the Riders’ business office (247-0340). Fans who pay for season tickets in full before August 31 will receive a discount in addition to a host of other benefits available exclusively to season ticket holders.

The RoughRiders last season won the first United States Hockey League Clark Cup (playoff) title in team history and also claimed a share of the Anderson Cup (regular season) title for the first time ever. The Riders went 42-13-5 last season, the best record in team history.
| Posted on Thursday, June 30, 2005 (Archive on Thursday, June 30, 2005)
