RoughRiders Tryout Camp Opens Friday
<p>June 1, 2005- The Clark Cup Champion Cedar Rapids RoughRiders hold their 2005 tryout camp this weekend at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. Approximately 70 players will take part in the camp, which begins Friday morning at 9:00AM. </p>
<p>Most prominent among the camp participants are eight returnees from the Riders' 2004-05 United States Hockey League title-winning team. Alex Stalock, the USHL Playoff Most Valuable Player, heads the list of returning Riders. Veteran forwards Phil Axtell, Jordan Pietrus, Kyle Solomon and Gary Steffes will also skate at the camp, as will returning defensemen Brent Cornelius, Chase Ryan and Kevin Wehrs. Forward Ted Purcell, who broke the team point-scoring record last season and is set to return to the Riders next season, will not attend camp this weekend.</p>
<p>This weekend will also mark the first chance for Riders fans to catch a glimpse of Ray Kaunisto, the team's first round selection in last month's USHL draft. Kaunisto is just one of a host of new faces set to take to the ice this weekend. Among the most experienced newcomers is veteran USHL defenseman Jeff Carlson, who was acquired in a trade with the Tri-City Storm last month.</p>
<p>Rider alumni Brandon Svendsen (Bowling Green), Shane Lovdahl (Alaska-Anchorage) and Zach Miskovic (St. Lawrence)- all members of last season's Clark Cup winning club- are also expected to take to the ice this weekend.</p>
<p>Players will be divided into four teams for a series of scrimmages beginning Friday morning. The top 40 players, as chosen by the RoughRiders coaching staff, will compete in a pair of all-star games Saturday evening and Sunday morning. </p>
<p>All try-out camp sessions are free and open to the public.</p>
