Clark Cup Champion RoughRiders Gear up for USHL Draft Tomorrow

May 11, 2005- Just days after winning the 2004-05 Clark Cup- the first United States Hockey League title in team history- the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders will take a significant step toward shaping their roster for the 2005-06 season during tomorrow’s United States Hockey League draft. The RoughRiders will choose tenth out of eleven teams.

Players under age 21 who played high school, midget, junior (outside the USHL) or even college hockey last season are all eligible for the draft. The draft order is determined using the reverse order of the 2004-05 USHL standings.

The Des Moines Buccaneers, who finished last in the league last season, will have the first choice. Again this year, the draft will be open to the public on line beginning at 10:00AM. Fans can follow the draft at www.ushl.com.

The Riders’ draftees will join the team’s veterans and affiliated players on the Cedar Rapids protected list.

The RoughRiders’ affiliated players last season were forward Ryan Santana and defenseman Nick Jaskowiak. While neither of those two was on the RoughRiders’ 2004-05 roster, the Riders do control their USHL rights. Cedar Rapids selected Santana and Jaskowiak in last August’s USHL futures draft.

Jaskowiak, a native of Bloomington, Minnesota, played for Benilde St. Margaret High School this season. Santana, from Yorba Linda, California, played midget AAA hockey for the L.A. Selects last season.

The RoughRiders’ draft picks will join the team’s veterans, a group of undrafted players and the Riders’ affiliated players in competing for roster spots at the club’s 2005 try-out camp June 2-5 at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
