Game Summary: May 1, 2005- RoughRiders 1 Sioux City 2

Tim Kennedy and Josh Meyers both had one goal and one assist as the Sioux City Musketeers defeated the host Cedar Rapids RoughRiders 2-1 Sunday night to even the best-of-five Clark Cup finals at one game apiece.

Sioux City goaltender Jimmy Spratt (30 saves) narrowly outdueled Cedar Rapids netminder Alex Stalock (19 saves) to backstop the Musketeers to the hard fought win.

“It was just a very good game,” said RoughRiders coach and general manager Mark Carlson. “I believe we played really well tonight, but Sioux City’s a very good team. I thought both goaltenders played well, it was just a very even game.”

After a scoreless first period, Kennedy set up Meyers for the game’s first goal just 1:04 into the second period. Meyers took a cross-ice pass from Kennedy and fired a low shot past Stalock from the left wing circle.

The Musketeers were on the power play when Kennedy scored what would prove to be the game winner at 5:17 of the second. Meyers sprung Kennedy on a breakaway, Stalock got a piece of Kennedy’s shot with his left pad, but the puck trickled just over the goal line to give Sioux City a 2-0 lead.

The Riders pulled back within one late in the second period when Ted Purcell scored a 5-on-3 power play goal after referee Tyler Johnson called back-to-back penalties on the Musketeers’ Dennis McCauley and Kent Bostrom. With Justin Abdelkader screening Spratt, Purcell fired the puck in under the crossbar from the high slot with just 11 seconds left in the period.

The Riders outshot the Musketeers 10-4 in the third period but failed to convert on three power plays- including another two man advantage- in the third. The Musketeers protected the lead even after the Riders pulled Stalock for a sixth attacker with just over a minute remaining.

“We created chances in the third, but it didn’t quite click for us,” said Carlson.

The series moves to Sioux City for game three Thursday night and game four Saturday evening.

“This is a chance for us to get on the road together as a team,” said Carlson. “We all expected a heck of a series and that’s what we’re getting.”

Box Score
