The Riders swept the Chicago Steel in the East Division finals after defeating the Indiana Ice in three straight in the division semi-finals.<o:p></o:p></H1> Dating back to their final two regular season games- a pair of wins over the Green Bay Gamblers- the Riders have now won a season high eight straight games overall.<o:p></o:p> Prior to this season, the Riders had never won more than four games in a single post-season and had never put together more than two consecutive playoff wins.<o:p></o:p> <H1 style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; TEXT-INDENT: 0.5in">The Riders outscored the Ice and Steel 26-13 over the first two rounds.<o:p></o:p></H1> Matt Vokes (4-4-8) leads the Riders in playoff point scoring, just ahead of Ted Purcell (4-3-7). Purcell scored the game winning goals in games one and three of the division finals. Vokes scored in sudden death to give the Riders the win in game two against the Steel.<o:p></o:p> <H1 style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; TEXT-INDENT: 0.5in">So far in the playoffs, the Riders have held the lead for 252:38 and have trailed for just 2:09. The Riders never trailed in the East Division finals.<o:p></o:p></H1> Rookie goaltender Alex Stalock has been superb for the Riders in the post season. Stalock has gone 4-0 and leads the league with a microscopic 1.39 playoff goals against average and an equally superb .963 save percentage. Stalock was in net for all three games against <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place>, turning in a 1.21 goals against average and a .967 save percentage to stymie the Steel.<o:p></o:p> The Musketeers reached the finals by defeating the Tri-City Storm three games to one in the West Division finals. The Musketeers finished off the Storm with a 3-2 win last night in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Kearney</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">Nebraska</st1:State></st1:place>. <o:p></o:p> The Musketeers won each of their first two series in four games. <st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City> eliminated <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Lincoln</st1:place></st1:City> in the opening round.<o:p></o:p> This is the Musketeers’ second trip to the finals in four years. The Muskies won the Clark Cup in 2002.<o:p></o:p> <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:place></st1:City> has generated plenty of playoff offense. The Musketeers have averaged 4.5 goals per post season game and have scored four or more goals in six of their first eight playoff contests.<o:p></o:p> <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:place></st1:City>’s Brian Bales (7-7-14) and Tim Kennedy (3-8-11) are the USHL’s top two post season point scorers by a comfortable margin. Purcell put the Riders up 2-0 at 2:52 of the second. Matt Vokes opened the scoring at 8:09 of the first period. Rider goaltender Alex Stalock (29 saves) surrendered only Dan Charleston’s power play goal at 7:15 of the second.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Friday, April 22: <st1:City w:st="on">Cedar Rapids</st1:City> 2 <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> 1 (ot)<o:p></o:p> Matt Vokes scored the game winner at 18:17 of overtime. <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Chicago</st1:place></st1:City>’s Nate Perkovich tied the score at one at 12:19 of overtime after Alec Martinez’s second period had given the Riders a 1-0 lead. The Riders’ Alex Stalock made 43 saves to narrowly outduel the Steel’s Shane Connelly (42 saves).<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Sunday, April 24: <st1:City w:st="on">Cedar Rapids</st1:City> 4 <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> 2<o:p></o:p> Ted Purcell broke a 2-2 tie with a power play goal at 5:13 of the third period. The Riders jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Shane Lovdahl and Jordan Pietrus (shorthanded) before <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> battled back with power play goals from David Marshall and Kevin Swallow. Rob Ricci finished off the win with an empty net goal in the final minute of the third period. Alex Stalock turned in a superb 44-save effort in the Rider net.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City></st1:place> vs. Tri-City<o:p></o:p> Tuesday, April 19: <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City></st1:place> 6 Tri-City 0<o:p></o:p> The Musketeers jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead and never looked back. Travis Turnbull scored twice for <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:place></st1:City>, while Blake Martin picked up three assists. Justin Bostrom and Dennis McCauley both notched a goal and an assist. Goals 45 seconds apart from Brian Bales and Justin Bostrom early in the first period set the tone for <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:place></st1:City>. Jimmy Spratt made 31 saves to pick up the shutout in the <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:place></st1:City> net, while Tri-City starter Michael Zacharias gave up four goals on just 16 shots before being replaced by Nick Hopper in the third period.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Friday, April 20: Tri-City 4 <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City></st1:place> 3 (ot)<o:p></o:p> J.P. Platisha scored at 14:14 of overtime to end a see-saw game. Platisha gave Tri-City a 1-0 lead at 12:45 of the first period with the first of his two goals. The Musketeers’ Justin Bostrom knotted the score at one with just 23 seconds remaining in the first period and then took the lead on Peter Lenes’ goal at 2:06 of the second. Tri-City responded while on a 5-on-3 power play as Jake Obermeyer scored at 15:18 of the middle frame. Tri-City was up 5-on-4 when Cody Chupp gave the Storm a short-lived 3-2 lead at 9:03 of the third period. Just two minutes and three seconds later, Kent Bostrom deadlocked the game at three for <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City></st1:place>.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Saturday, April 21: <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City></st1:place> 4 Tri-City 1<o:p></o:p> Brian Bales (one goal, two assists) and Tim Kennedy (one goal, one assist) led the Musketeer attack. Bales and Kennedy gave <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:place></st1:City> a 2-0 lead with goals late in the first period. A goal from Matt Ambroz at 15:24 of the second period brought the the Storm within one, but the Musketeers quickly responded with goals a minute and twenty-one seconds apart from Dennis McCauley and Kent Bostrom.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Tuesday, April 26: <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City></st1:place> 3 Tri-City 2<o:p></o:p> Brian Bales scored two goals and the Musketeers held on to win despite being outshot 14-1 in the third period. The Musketeers entered the third period up 3-1, but Tri-City pulled within one on Ryan Gunderson’s goal at 8:02 of the third. Jimmy Spratt (29 saves) stopped a series of Tri-City chances in the final 12 minutes to preserve the win for the Musketeers. Bales’ first goal gave the Musketeers the lead just 40 seconds into the game. Zach Cohen responded for the Storm just one minute and eight seconds later, but Bales put <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:place></st1:City> on top again with just 36 seconds left in the first.
