RoughRiders Open Clark Cup Finals with Home Games Friday, Sunday; Tickets Now on Sale

April 25, 2005- The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders will open the United States Hockey League’s Clark Cup finals on home ice this Friday night at 7:05. The Riders will also host game two of the best-of-five series Sunday evening at 7:05.

The Riders will battle the winner of the West Division finals- either the Sioux City Musketeers or the Tri-City Storm- in a best-of-five series for the Clark Cup. The Riders will go on the road for game three and, if necessary, game four of the finals. If a fifth game is required to decide the series, it would be played at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The dates and times for game three and (if necessary) games four and five of the finals will not be finalized until the Riders’ opponent is determined.

The Riders qualified for the finals for the first time in team history by completing a three game sweep of the Chicago Steel in the East Division finals with a 4-2 win over the Steel last night in Bensenville, Illinois.

The Musketeers lead the Storm two games to one in the West Division finals and can finish off Tri-City with a win in game four tomorrow night in Kearney, Nebraska. Should the Storm win tomorrow night, they would force a fifth and deciding game Wednesday evening in Sioux City.

The Riders’ sweep of the Steel was Cedar Rapids’ second in as many series. The Riders defeated the Indiana Ice three games to none in the opening round. Dating back to their final two regular season games- a pair of wins over the Green Bay Gamblers- the Riders have now won a season high eight straight games overall.

The Riders (42-13-5, 89 points) won the regular season division title and earned a share of the Anderson Cup for the first time in club history by finishing tied for first overall with the Omaha Lancers.

Though this marks the first time that the Riders have reached the finals, Cedar Rapids has reached the Clark Cup semi-finals (East Division finals) three times in the last four years. The Riders are also one of just three USHL teams who have reached the playoffs each of the last five years.

Clark Cup finals tickets are currently on sale at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office (261-4625). Playoff ticket prices range from $9 to $18. The ticket office is open from noon to 5:00PM Monday through Friday and from noon through the end of the second period on game days.

The Clark Cup is symbolic of supremacy in American junior hockey and is presented annually to the playoff champions of the USHL, the nation’s only Tier I junior league.
| Posted on Monday, April 25, 2005 (Archive on Monday, April 25, 2005)
