RoughRiders’ Tormey Commits to Minnesota State

April 18, 2005-- Cedar Rapids RoughRiders goaltender Dan Tormey has committed to Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minnesota, the RoughRiders announced today.

“This is great news for Dan,” said RoughRiders coach and general manager Mark Carlson. “He has worked hard and competed hard for us all season. Its exciting to seem him get this opportunity after all the effort he’s put in in three seasons in the league.”

Tormey, 20, was last week named to this season’s All-United States Hockey League Second Team. During the regular season he led the USHL in save percentage (.926), ranked second in goals against average (2.25), was tied for third in shutouts (3) and finished fourth in wins while posting a hugely impressive 23-4-1 record in 32 games.

Tormey went 2-0 with a 3.38 goals against average and a .892 save percentage in the the Riders’ three games to none victory over the Indiana Ice in the opening round of the Clark Cup playoffs. Tormey made 34 saves- including 21 in the third period alone- in game three last Tuesday in Indianapolis as the Riders closed out the Ice with a 5-4 overtime victory.

Tormey was twice named the USHL Defensive Player of the Week during the regular season. Tormey earned the honor the second time following the final week of the regular season. The Syracuse, New York, native stopped a remarkable 48 shots on Saturday April 2 as the Riders won their final game of the regular season 4-2 over the Green Bay Gamblers. With 48 saves, Tormey matched the personal USHL career high and league season high he set in a 3-1 win in Green Bay on February 26. Tormey’s heroics in the final contest of the campaign came on the heels of a 34-save effort in the Riders’ 4-1 victory over the Gamblers one night earlier.

The Riders acquired Tormey in a December, 2003 trade with the Des Moines Buccaneers. The Syracuse, New York, native went 4-6 with a 2.66 goals against average and a .921 save percentage in 12 games after joining the Riders last season. He played a total of 23 games between Cedar Rapids and Des Moines last year and posted an overall record of 10-13 while turning in a 3.11 goals against average and a .913 save percentage. Tormey began his USHL career in 2002-03 with the River City Lancers.

The Riders will meet the Chicago Steel in the best-of-five United States Hockey League East Division finals beginning Wednesday night 7:05 at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The Riders will also host game two Friday at 7:05PM. The series will shift to Bensenville, Illinois, for game two next Sunday at 5:05PM. If necessary, a fourth game would be played in Bensenville on Monday, April 25 at 8:05PM. If a fifth game is required to decide the series, it would take place on Wednesday, April 27 in Cedar Rapids at 7:05PM.

Second round playoff tickets are currently on sale at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office (261-4625). Playoff ticket prices range from $9 to $18. The ticket office is open from noon to 5:00PM Monday through Friday and from noon through the end of the second period on game days.
| Posted on Monday, April 18, 2005 (Archive on Monday, April 18, 2005)
